went to one of the local pawn shops and was looking at the silver when i noticed a 336 sitting on the rack. i asked to look at it and looks almost like new. Its JM stamped and serial number starts with 95xxxx. How did i do and any upgrades needed?

Upgrades?   Just ammo.

Good score.

skinner peep sights are great.

Skinner sights and all the reloading components you can afford.  I just added a nice custom leather sling to my 336 but I'm not much for any of the other leather accessories that seem to be popular on MO.

Nice JM score, keep her stock and I agree on the Skinner sights. A nice leather sling would be nice also.

As mentioned, the Skinner sights are nice.  I have factory sights on two different Marlin rifles that I shoot without issue... Have skinners on a few that I shoot without issue as well.

Reloading components (or ammo) would be the mandatory upgrades.,, Skinners are a nice bonus, but the rifle is serviceable stock.

I do not reload so not an option , already added a nice leather sling.

Sounds like you need ammo then my friend....
Link Posted: 10/20/2013 9:28:35 AM EDT
you did good.
Link Posted: 10/20/2013 11:00:00 PM EDT
good job, by looking at the wood you have a 336W. The W had a birch stock as opposed to the C that had a Walnut stock

a serial number starting with 95 indicates that the rifle was built in 2005

Since you don't reload and factory ammo will be your only choice, try a few boxes of both
150gr. and 170gr..Most Marlins really prefer one over the other. My 93 likes 170's better.

Another option....have any friends that reload? If so, maybe they would help you reload on their
equip.. You may have to buy a set of dies and shell holder but you would save in the long run.

you have the rifle right? decide for yourself if the sights suck.
personally, for a fast shooting rifle the buckhorn style sights are perfect imo

I'm not much of a MArlin fan  (fat wood has its place in other areas of life though )  ---  but for $240 , i'd find a spot in the truck for it too.  Good score      --------   I don't reload for 30-30 either because it is one of the few hunting rounds you can still get at somewhat reasonable prices  (12-15$ a box)   -- after you get it dialed in,  a box or 2 of cartridges should last a whole season

But if you like it enough to plink with it too --- after a while even 12$ a box would start to get spendy

Give the stock sights a go, they may be all you need ----  but Marlins seem to be one of the brands of leverguns that is permissible to scope if you want to -- I know I have no qualms running a scope on my Guide Gun .    Redfield makes a nice 2-7 x 32 that looks proportional to a leverguns trim lines , or a Leupold 2-7 x20 .    I personally don't give a sh-- about looks on mine, so I run a 3-9x40 I had laying around and it works great

Other sights are the Williams FP peep sight, and a Lyman tang sight if you don't want to scope it, but the stock sights aren't cutting it

It's hit or miss.  Apparently soon after Remington bought out Marlin in 2007 these rifles started to be put together by diseased monkeys and fit and finish went way, WAY downhill. to the point where you could see how bad the front sights are off by the naked eye.  Rumor has it that the employees were pissed off at being bought out and facing imminent lay-offs and they sabotaged the equipment so that their inexperienced replacements were putting out dreck and they didn't know how to correct it.  It's the whole reason that I went looking for an old timer Marlin when I caught the 30-30 itch myself.

As others have already pointed out yours was born in 2005 you should be good.  You'll know when you bring it out to the range.

Twenty round boxes of 30-30 ammo for $12 have gone the way of the Dodo bird.

I agree on the great score but your eyes must be way better than mine , I really do way better with some type of aperture sights on my lever guns.

Guess that is personal choice

I am a old school old fart so I have always used Lyman peeps . Small aperture when messing about in good light and on clear targets , unscrew the apeature and use the housing like a gost ring in dimmer light

that sucks -- must be a regional thing -- I bought them in Oklahoma at that price 6 months ago  --- coulda been 12.97 to be fair, or perhaps 13.97, but it was no more than 14 ----   Federal 150 or 170 grain soft points

I prefer a receiver peep sight myself over the OEM buckhorn type sights.

Boy you must be busy to not be able to look after a few boxes of .30-30 ammo.
