I picked up a nice used Mossberg 590A1 over the holidays. It's the 18.5" barrel and a 5rd magazine tube. I suppose it's technically a 6rd tube, but I can only get 5rds in there.

So I want to extend the magazine to at least +1. I was looking at the Nordic Components +1 extension but then I got to thinking and started looking at replacing the whole magazine tube to one that holds more. It looks like a cheaper solution.

Has anyone done this? Any issues or reasons not to go that way?

If you put the 8+1 590 tube on, you will need a new barrel to match. Extensions are just elongated magazine caps.

Ah yes. That makes total sense. I don't know why I didn't think of that.

S&J Hardware makes nice +1 and +2 extensions for the 18.5" 590's. Vang makes a nice +1 and both companies extensions have an ambidextrous sling mount that can be removed if you dont use slings and both also make great replacement followers too. If you want cheaper there's a Choate +1 as well but the followers and mag springs are sorta bleh with Choate.
