I've been getting 3/4 - 1/2 MOA groups, when I do my part, with my M-1A using 168 gr match ammo.

I just order some Privi 175 gr BTHP match ammo, as the price was right, and was wondering if anyone here had tried this ammo, or other 175 gr loadings in their M-1A...

if so, please let me know how you like it

thanks

My SOCOM II with the 16" barrel loves the 168 match Privi, I'm down to 180 rounds of it but can't find it now.  I ordered the 175 match Privi hoping for the same results.  Hopefully will get it this week.

I do much better with the heavier loads with the short barrel, is this typical?

The pic is 100 yards with the iron SOCOM II sights, (not the best for target work).

Haven't tried the PPU 175 grainers, your rifle has a "mind" of its own, mine loves reloads w/ Rem. 150gr Bronze point.....shoots as good at 100yds as the FGMM. Just red an article on bullet depth and accuracy, surprising the difference a few thousands can make.

I had a Super Match with a Douglas barrel and she loved the shit out of 168 Hornady A-Max's.  The 175's she didn't like too much....................................finicky bitch she was.

Not what I want to hear after ordering 1K of the 175's.

Every rifle is different.  See what yours likes.  Most of the guys shooting High Power at the club are using 175s.

1.  Each rifle is different;
2.  If you bought the ammo, you make the best of it;
3.  Use consistently the same ammo and don't switch.

The rifle is not important in the story that I relate.  I had an instructor give me hundreds of rounds of US manufactured 168 .308 factory because they didn't work in his rifle.

I had a different rifle in which I use 168 grain Federal match.  The other company's match did not work for me.  I related it to .308 Garand clips as "regular" ammo thereafter.

feersum,

If you never plan to shoot much beyond 300 yards the SMK 168 is a great choice... but then it was designed as a 300 meter comp bullet.  Beyond 300 the wind becomes a big factor and bullets with a higher BC will perform better.

I shoot a lot of 600 yard competition using a Match M1.  I have a "loaded" model M1A but I don't shoot it in comps.  Have shot it at 600 for fun-practice.

In both rifles the SMK 168 is a very good bullet out to 300 and decent at 600.  The SMK 175 is MUCH better at 600.  The JLK 175 VLD is better still..... but then, looking at my taglines you'd expect me to say that.

The 4 match aggregate score I refer to in my tagline was shot with my SA Match M1, 1-10" twist .308 Wilson barrel with (At that time.) 4.5K rounds downrange, and the JLK 175 VLD over Re-15.

In August of this year at the Planet Matches I used this same rifle (Now with over 5k rounds out.) to shoot a 600 yard score of 199-10X.   Same bullet and load.

Best regards,
Swampy

If your rifle slings them well, I suggest 168gr. short lines, 175gr. long line.

I have not had any oppurtunities to shoot 175 but just so you know I think that is the weight limit for M1As. I emailed Springfield and they said 175 was the limit because i accidently bought some federal power-shok 180gr... just a  friendly warning. Ive heard some stories about breaking op rods or something crazy like that. idk if it is true but..

My 1895 Supermatch loved 168's.  I never tried 175 out of her so I can't comment on those.  Sadly I had to sell it to help  pay for my wedding last year....I'll get another one some day though...

As an Army competition shooter, we used to pull the bullets from M118 Match ammo (173gr bullet) and replace it with either a 168 gr SMK for 200 and 300 yds and with the 180 gr SMK for 600 yds. One shooter on the team did this for a season with 190 gr Sierras for 600 yds; however, near the end of the season, his bolt roller cracked in half. The 180 gr SMK bullet in government M14 Rifles works fine with no problems.

Geeze, that's an old rifle.

I have a bunch of 178 AMAX's that I put up for sale on EE and now I am wondering if they will be ok to shoot in my M1A.  I plan on picking up one of the adjustable gas nuts to lessen the pounding on the op system.
