I was thinking of building an ar15 in 45 acp. My buddy suggested trying to find a MP5 clone in that caliber. I have no clue where to start or what companies to look at as too the fact I know virtually nothing about MP5s.

I dont want to spend more than what it would cost me to do the ar15 which is about $1100.

I thought it would be nice to have for home defense some day

Any suggestions?

The only game in town for off-the-shelf MP5 clones is Coharie Arms.

Last time I checked they ran about $1600. I bought one some months ago and with a few very minor changes (HK extractor and spring) mine runs great.
You can also have one custom built by many reputable builders but the cost will be quite a bit higher.

Your only choice in that $$$$ range is a Special Weapons SW45. If you can find the X model (SW45X) it is the so called "improved" version and it still may or may not run without tweaking.  The fit and finish on them is also spotty and you may very well end up spending another few hundred $$$ to get it to run correctly.

My advice, FWIW to you, would be to pass on it.

just my .02¢

I appreciate the help. I am much more familiar with the AR platform anyway.

Pass on the .45 MP5 clone. Not really any decent clones available.

Go to the pistol caliber AR forum and take a look at the DI .45 AR upper, get a Cav-Arms lower, and a Hahn grease gun mag block. Feeds from cheap GG mags (just research which ones to use and not to use.)

Upper- $700
Lower- $150
LPK- $60
Mag block- $85
Hahn Sub-caliber buffer- $60

Total before optics, mags, and ammo: $1055

another vote for the USC.

but be warned, they seem to want to turn into UMP clones.

and when they do, it is FULLY worth the transformation.

I have yet to have a failure with mine, in USC or UMP form.
