Does anyone know if the old M40 Viet Nam era Sniper rifles can be bought by civilians? If so, where?

Quoted:
They were Remington 700s in .30-06 with Redfield 3x9 scopes and wood free-floated stocks.  Nothing particularly fancy, though they were often trued up and well-maintained.

Of course, you can get much better versions of these rifles today.

Are you sure it was .30-06?  I always thought it was 7.62/51 due to plenty of ammo available (M60).  Don't get me wrong, if it was .30-06, that's great.  I have 3 Garands and a Savage 110FP in .30-06.  I think it is a great round.

The Winchester 70s that they replaced were .30-06 caliber, but the M40s were .308 Winchester/7.62 x 51 NATO chambered.

Back to the original subject, I believe that blackrifle51 was asking if the Feds have surplused any M40s to peons like us. I doubt it, but........

You can buy them at any dealer that will order it for you, in about any caliber you want. There are two or three for sale in the Gun List right now. They even have 'em on the Remington web site.

M40s or something else? The Remington website doesn't list any M40s.

J_D the Rem 40-XB's are listed on the Rem LE site but they're not M40's.  That's as close as I can find.

That's what I mean. They have the 40-XBs, PSSs, etc., but no rifles designated the M40 and none of those mentioned have the wood stock.

51- the Marine Corps being always frugal, turned the M40's into the m40a1's, now turning those into the A3's. The past and present M40's are built and maintained by armorors in Quantico. These were never offered for sale by Remington or the CMP, because of their custom nature and reuse. If you want a copy of a Vietnam era M40 I would contact the people at Iron Brigade Armory, they should be able to put an (accurate era) reproduction together for you...... Be ready to dig deep but there worth it.

you can also try Texas brigade armory. web sites down but...
www.texasbrigade.com

Both build fine rifles, but IBA will best suit your historic  needs.

The answer is NO!, You can have one made by thousands of builders though. Wait a minute thats a M40A1, Sure you can, the M40 is a comercial model 700ADL in .308(basically) with a 3x9 Redfield scope, It has the both sights still on the barrel.

rugger is right.  Almost all of the M40's were rebuilt into M40A1's and most of those are or will be M40A3's.  All are .308/7.62mm

Iron Brigade is pricey, but they build top grade weapons using USMC armorers and M40 series specs OR better. With no budget constraints, this is the place to go. Good Luck. For Current issue USMC scopes check out US Optics. they were offering a very limited supply of USMC M40 scopes for sale to the public very recently. They are about $2500. Check out the web page to see if they still have any available.www.usoptics.com/M40riflescope.htmEdited to say that they are all gone already. Sorry.
