After about 3000 rounds my bolt carrier key came loose and the gun started short cycling. Can the screws which hold the bolt carrier key to the bolt be secured by using lock tight or is the method of "staking" them the only way to go?

I have heard from some that it isn't necessary to stake the screws and I have also heard that you should do it. All of mine are staked so I just keep going along with that. You could do both and probably will not have to worry about it again.

First, get new ones. Chances are they are stretched and will fail anyway. New ones  usually have a thread sealant on them. You can go overboard staking them, just use good sense. The TM gives good instructions on staking. Raise the stakes too high or wide and you will impede carrier travel.

I have had this problem with several new Bolt carriers that I have bought.  I would just tighten them back down and take a punch and ting them in 4 spots on each screw.  Cured it for me.
