Im wanting to get a lever gun, the local pawn shop has a scoped older marlin lever action 30-30 I cant remembr what model but I think its a 336. I can get it scope and all for $200otd. Its in pretty good shape from what I can tell What do I need to look for in a lever action to make sure I am getting my money worth. Thanks

Here are the pics, Sorry for the crappy quality Ill take some more when I can get outside. Cant wait to shoot it

You really can't beat a Marlin 336 for $200, quite honestly. How is the bore? Pre-safety?

the bore looked great, forgive me buts whats pre safety?

EDIT if you mean does it have a safety on the back of the reciever. It DOES NOT have a safety there

If you found a pre-safety 336 for $200 you better go back and buy it before I drive up there and get it lol. That is a great rifle at a great price. These guns are great and hold up very well, the cross bolt safety was put in to satisfy our new PC culture and the ones without it are highly prized. This gun will serve you well for years to come. Definitely worth the price, looking forward to pics and a range report.

I agree and I don't even care for Marlin's. Go buy that gun even if you have to float a loan to do it. Take the scope off and throw it in your spare's box, mount a good receiver type aperture sight on it and never look back. You'll be glad you did.

I went back in there yesterday and I was wrong its not a marlin 336 but a Glenfield model 30A. Do you guys think its still worth $200?
Link Posted: 9/15/2009 11:26:11 AM EST
Yes it is. The Glenfield is a house brand made by Marlin for Sears, and, if memory serves, Western Auto and maybe a few other retail outlets, and what it amounts to is a 336 without all of the bells and whistles. Its still plenty of rifle for $200.

Some people prefer the Glenfield and the store named versions, just to be different. There is an older Glenfield 30-30 with the half length mag tube that often goes for 400+ on GB. Personally, once you get up there, I'm looking to pay more for a SS, laminate stock, Ballard rifled XLR.

Well I went and bought the Glenfield tiday. I wound up trading one of my 91/30 mosins and $100 for it. Its in pretty good shape and the scope is a marlin 4x. I will posi pics tonight when I get in from work

It looks like you have a nifty rifle there, but what is it with taking pictures of feet around here?

Be careful shooting that thing. I have a feeling you may end up with scope brow on the first shot.

Nice score Goinghome!

I'm still kicking myself for passing up a Glenfield just like that for the same price a couple years ago.
