I just want something reasonably accurate that can hit hard and hit relatively fast.  I have no experience with either platform and I am sure both will be heavy.

I am on a budget so I won't get to buy the top end of either.

I could also put the money into a precision bolt action .308

The G3 types are nice but the ergonomics suck big time.

FAL all the way.

I hope to have one of each in my collection someday. Century Arms is tempting with cetme rifles for 500 and fal's for 700, but I am not willing to spend that much of my hard earned money on something of questionable quality.  I have decided to keep saving my money for a nice one or possibly a used fal from a good company.  The HK G3 mags can still be had for less than 20 rounds of .308. Here are a couple of good options.

I'd do a FAL of the two you listed.

But to just veer off on a side road....Since you mention 308 why not go off into the wild blue wonder and pick up a nice 8mm Mauser and handload. You'll have a rifle which is both cheaper to purchase and has a bit more pepper on it than a 308.

I agree. I've shot both. In my opinion the ergos, as far as controls are concerned, are far better on an FAL. Now if only FAL mags were as cheap as G3 mags.

G3 pattern if you want accuracy, FAL pattern if you want AK level reliability.

See now I think the G3 is ever bit as reliable as the FAL. The variable gas system on the FAL causes more problems IMHO then the system on the G3 which lacks it.

The G3/HK91 is everybit as reliable as the FAL. They are equals to one another, but the individual will determine which is better.

Here's a primer for you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sl4p7qptO0A&feature=related

The G3 really doesn't have a gas system semi-auto operation, just the chamber flutes. With properly cut fluting, you can't make the gun stop. My PTR-91K hasn't jammed. Ever. I cannot make it stop working, I fired 2K of 308 before I ever cleaned it.

PTR has a list of ammo that may or may not work in the gun, but the gun has preferences.

I've shot the dreaded Indian w/o issue, as well as Lith, Radway, MEN, DAG, Silver Bear, Brown Bear, Lake City M80 ball (delinked from belts), M118LR, M118SB, Winchester 7.62mm Nato, Wolf, and Federal all w/o issues. Some PTR owners haven't been as lucky though.

Upgrades I did: MFI low rail mount, HK Furniture, and a heavy buffer. Recoil is about equal to an AK in 7.62X39mm now!

Actually the G3 has the edge over the FAL in durability/reliability. It also is slightly more accurate. However the FAL is far faster in the mag change department and the adjustable gas allows you to compensate for ammo variances as well as fine tune for recoil reduction. If it were me, between the two I'd choose the G3 if the shots were more likely to be longer (mountains/desert) and the FAL if in a MOUT environment, but its really a toss up. Personally, I'd choose an AR in 308 over both, but thats just me.

If you're already trained up on an AR platform, go for a 7.62 AR.

If you're serious about workin' with a rifle, similar ergonomics & controls will make training a lot easier.  When you need to go loud in the real world muscle memory will take over and you won't be fumbling for a safety or mag release that isn't where you expect it to be.

I'm not really a fan of either.  The FAL feels too slender and very top heavy.  The G3 is chunky and obnoxiously heavy for what it is.

FAL...     The g3 is exxestially a CETME right?  I had one a cetme and I did not like the balance at all. The h/g was to thin

The FAL has a nice bipod and thick h/g. It was just more comfortable IMO.

Now I only mess with M1A's

HK91 =/= Cetme. The HK91 is an evolution of the cetme, but they are not the same.

You can also buy thicker furniture if you do not like what came on yours

This^^, could also get a 6.5 or 6.8 upper depending on needs.

I have seriously been looking at that.  Also found a 7.62x39 Piston AR upper.

found 6.5 grendel ammo for a decent price but the upper wasn't cheap whereas for the 6.8 the upper was cheap and the ammo expensive.  the 7.62 has cheapest ammo and while the upper wasn't cheap, i already have the ability to reload the x39 at a buddy's house.

I got lucky and got a good Cetme.

It is a lot of rifle for the cost..but really..about as primitive as an AK. I like it..recoil is mild..mags cheap. Main issues are the fact the wood handguards are only marginaly effective at controlling the heat..and it's a bastard to clean the crud out of the chamber/lockup part of the barrel.

I own an L1A1 version of the FAL too..it's ok..accurate and reliable..but it's one of those rifles I like..but just have never really clicked with.

M1A/M14 is my 7.62 NATO rifle of choice..I own an M1A..and 2 Polytech M14 rifles...These be the best in my opinion..but ain't on your list...of the ones on your list..I would go with a quality G3 clone over the FAL..for no particular reason except I seem to do better with the Cetme(although I don't think I would recomend a Cetme itself..I do like mine)

I bought a used .308 bolt rifle a few weeks ago..a Howa made S&W 1500..shoots extremely good..paid $275 for it. Can hit a golf ball at 100 meters from a rest...My 'new' S&W came to me with a newish looking scope..and perfectly dialed in..
