What are my options for long range thermal optics?  Need something that picks up heat signatures.

Thanks

Your options start at about $8,000.

Are you still interested?

I have an Insight MTM, you can discern a guy with it out to about 400m

The picture there is a guy at about 300m. I have been very very happy with it but probably isnt as good for longer range stuff as something with a more powerful zoom it only goes to 2x.

Like Victor said, decide if you want handheld/weapon mounted etc, then buy. I use the thermal more for picking up targets then shoot them with my weapons mounted NVGs.

Nice setup.  Has anyone tried simultaneously using thermal and I^2 monoculars, one in front of each eye?

BTW: can you better define "long range?"

400+ Meters Range

And this will be weapon-mounted

Just curious, could a specter thermal like Vic's above take .308 recoil?

Anyone already mentioned SpecterIR?
I know, this is almost getting boring...

What does a flash/heat bloom look like in these thermal scopes when shooting? Any overload/cutoff issues?

LOG ON TO YOUTUBE.COM.  SEARCH FOR JAGERPRO AND YOU WILL GET TO WATCH SEVERAL GOOD VIDEOS ON HOG HUNTING USING THERMAL WEAPON SIGHTS.  I HAVE HUNTED HOGS WITH JAGERPRO (APRIL, 2008).  THEY USE .308 CALIBER RIFLES.  THESE VIDEOS WILL GIVE YOU A PRETTY GOOD IDEA OF WHAT YOU MIGHT SEE THROUGH A THERMAL SCOPE IN A HUNTING ENVIRONMENT.  ONE SPECIFC THING:  THERE IS NO MUZZLE BLAST PICKED UP IN THE THERMAL SIGHT.

Can this elcan sight be switched to a colored format? Or is it greyscale only?

I wonder how those critters would react to their buddy getting smacked w/ a 200gr pill coming from a suppressed rifle...  If the sound of impact and subsequent protest of it's beneficiary did not cause a bunch of commotion, I bet one guy w/ a good rifle and plenty of ammo could do some bad baaad things.

Have you ever tried mounting that MTM over your left eye and your AN/PVS-14 over your right just to see what it looks like?
