The ACR bolt group appears similar to the HK G36 design. Is it a more refined design, or a straight copy? It seems with more metal, the ACR may have been trying address the short comings of G36 and XM8?

I was kind of thinking about that as well. Unfortunately, I can't give you a clear answer.

Both the G36 and the ACR are based on the AR-18 operating system.

THis is now a "AR-18 is the grand daddy of the modern 5.56 piston driven rifle" thread.

It was only the second 5.56 military rifle (after the AR15) so that doesn't really say a lot.

It is a good design, which is why it's been a design inspiration for other rifles as time goes on.

Yah but the top op rod piston design goes back to the SVT for sure, and sooner?  There were plenty of examples that the AR copied, not to mention the STG44.   Just cause it's kind of like doesn't mean it is.  The patent for the AR18 is on line and there is only a small similarity.  The most striking similarity is the bolt head.

everything on the 2 rifles are very similar, the piston system is an improvement on the acr since its adjustable. the g36 has the weight advantage, the g36 loaded is lighter than my acr unloaded (with 10.5" barrel, x300 and t-1)

they both have a very similar recoil pulse, but the acr feels like an ar15 when shouldered, the g36 just feels different with a more uncomfortable cheek weld.

the acr is exactly what you would get if you took the g36 and added ar15 parts to it
