I found these pics on MSNBC website.
Is it normal to carry more than one rifle out in the field?  Or is that his personal weapon (AR15)?

The small rifle in his hands looks like a port firing rifle. Notice the lack of a stock, front sight, longer barrel than the M4, and the slab sided upper. The slung rifle is most likely his primary rifle. The one in his hands must have come out of an APC. His primary may have taken a dump and he has gone to plan B.

How do military folk go take dumps without their rifles with them?

Or maybe it's just us wierdo's who cradle AR's everywhere we go.

No. A Soldier is assigned one rifle to utilize.

Zero chance that he is holding the rifle while another guy takes a leak or some other lame explanation. It goes where you go, period. Most likely he is holding the rifle of a soldier who has been "killed" during the exercise.

One sad option is that in combat you lose a buddy, you don't leave the weapon on the ground for the bad guys.

Odds are that the soldier is using the M231 port firing weapon for "trench clearing".  This weapon is open bolt.  You can unload a 30 round mag in no time.  The M231 is used in the M2 Bradley IFV.

Yeah, it's a M231 FPW.  Could be he unscrewed it from the ball in the ramp prior to dismount so they could lower the ramp, and just decided to use it.  Even without any sights, they're HOT!  You burn through a mag mighty quick, but it can lay out some serious lead for suppression while it is going.
