I'd like to get another decent 1911-type .45 - I have a Mitchell Arms "custom" .45 now, but it has a junky aluminum frame and I hate it. Of course, I'd love to get a high-end competition gun, but simply can't afford $1000+++ for one. About the only "trick" features that I require is a beavertail safety. Are there any guns out there that are solid shooters that are still reasonably priced (JFTR, I haven't ruled out the LEGP 1911, though I'm not too keen on parkerized guns).

Springfield Loaded model may be a consideration. I've seen them lately for around $500 slightly used. I think NIB is around $600 if you shop around.

My next 1911 will be a systima Colt. Exact 1911 duplicate made on Colt machinery by Colt trained technicians.

The last gun test I read was about Springfield,and although the guy SA gave the guns to never mentioned it,if you looked at the data close the best shooter out of the bunch
was the Mil-Spec.Outgrouped the hi-end models.Pretty funny aint it? Shouldn't be too hard to hang the grip safety of choice off the back.

I own a Colt 1911 (NOT A1), Systema and SA loaded.

Colt is collector item but does shoot well. Accuracy is what you would expect - fair. Very reliable.

Systema is about as accurate as above. Horrible trigger. Some custom work would make it a nice gun. Paid $299. No doubt will spend that or more to snaz it up.

The SA is stainless which I do not care for. Would rather have blue or park by far. Shoots great, sweet gun. Had a couple burrs on the slide that caused jams but after removing those and a liberal dose of CLP it runs great. USA made frame.

Now for what I consider better. I have a 10 mm and .45 Tanfaglio Witness. (Copy of CZ; want CZ 95 too but need to save $$ first!!) Both are more accurate than the 1911's. Dead nuts reliable. About $325 new. To each his own!

I know you said it's out of your price range, but if you ever get the money ($1000) for a 1911 get a Kimber CDP(Custom Defense Package). They're sweet guns and shoot very well, I chose the Pro-CDP with a 4" barrel for carry purposes but it still has the full length grip for everybody with big hands like me. Well worth the money for all the customizing involved(i.e. - heat treated slide with no square edges so it won't snag when carrying, tritium night sights, ambidextrious safety, beveled mag well, high ride beavertail, bushingless barrel, etc)

Having a Kimber CDP, I must say I was not impressed when I realized that the barrel was cast, and they only machined the visible portions of the barrel. I don't like as cast surfaces on high stress parts, but that is just a structural engineers opinion. Great gun otherwise and a great shooter.

I am also ordering a LEGP 1911, but I the parkerized finish doesn't bug me. I decent SA 1911 with night sights for $600 bucks is a very fair deal as well.

Like ChairBorn Ranger said, look around and buy a Norinco.It's more mil spec than a Colt 1911A1 and not a bad shooter straight from the box.With the money you save you can fit that safty you want,and have enough left over for a match barrel and bushing.Then as time goes by and fortunes improve,you can mod it out to your hearts content.

I cant believe that someone hasnt turned you on to the LEGP 1911 offered on this site.

Springfield "Loaded" , parkerised, Novak night sights for $600 + shipping, extras available ie: Heine sights, engraving etc. This retails for over $800.

Get a Colt 1991,I have had about ten,from commanders to the full size and there fine.

There only $500.00-$600.00 new! and you can do anything you want to them,spend $600.00 now and trick the gun out of time.
A gun in the hand is better tham every thing else

"Colt" Systema 1927. All forged parts, Mil-Spec., interchangeable with M1911A1's, made on Colt machinery under Colt supervision. $300.00 range. I'm hearing good things about these. If I were in the market for a project gun I'd go with one of these.
