Deciding on setting up a trust...After that what do I do.

I know about the form 1 for making a NFA item, but how do you go about buying a can?  Shooter's here in Jax is a Class III dealer, but if I have them order it will I have to pay the tax twice, once for them to take possession & once for me?  How does this work?

Do I send off a form to the ATF myself first & then go to the store when I get some sort of pre-approval or what?

Do you have to engrave the can that you buy or is that only for cans/guns that you make w/ a form 1?

I am committed to get YHM cans.  Not the best but good enough for me.

The dealer should help you do all the paperwork (if not I would find another dealer), it is just one $200 stamp if you are buying a new can from a dealer.

ETA you won't have to engrave anything.

When you send the form 4 off to the ATF you have to note the SN of the can you are wanting to buy right?  Then they approve it & return you form 4 & the dlr can sell it to you.

Now how can you put the SN of the can on the form 4 if the Dlr hasn't ordered it yet.  How can he order a can to sell you if he doesn't know if your form 4 will be approved?

Do you basically have to pay the DLR for the can months before you can take possession of it?

Yes, in my experience you have to pay the dealer up front. The way it worked with my dealer was he did the paperwork, I gave him the money for the suppressor, a seperate check for the ATF and he mailed the check and paperwork off for me. Like I say your dealer, if they are worth a lick and you are a serious customer (not saying your aren't) should be happy to sit down and walk you through all this. If the dealer doesn't have time for you I really would look for a different dealer...

Correct.

The approved Form 4 goes to the dealer.

You can't.

How can he order a can to sell you if he doesn't know if your form 4 will be approved?
He's taking a small chance that he'll end up with a can he can't transfer to you, but your money is tied up, not his.

Do you basically have to pay the DLR for the can months before you can take possession of it?
Pretty much...

Dealers and Manufacturers can transfer silencers back and forth to each other for free on a Form-3. This will get any new can from any manufacturer or dealer to your dealer with no additional $200 taxes paid.

Note - your dealer may/will charge a transfer fee for any can you buy elsewhere and have transferred to him.

The transfer from your dealer to you on a Form-4 is a $200 taxable event.

Look around your area for NFA dealers and go talk to them. When you find one that you like, post back here with what he has to offer. If he passes our BS test, go for it.
