How does a suppressed .40 S&W using 180 grain bullets compare to 147 grain 9mm's?  Anyone out there with a suppressed Glock 22?

****UPDATE*****  This is the email I received from GemTech.

I give the edge to the 9mm. A smaller aperture makes it easier to suppress.
Yes, a Blackside-40 will work on a 9mm when they become available sometime
in late February or early March 2007. You will need a 9mm barrel threaded in
9/16-24.

I emailed Gem-Tech last night with the same question, but with the Holidays they may be off until after the New Year.  I have the money, finally, for a suppressor and I need to know which to get.  180 gr .40S&W ammo cost about the same as 147 gr 9mm and  I prefer .40 cal as well.  However if a .40 cal is much louder than a 9mm I'll choose a 9mm can.

I also asked if you could use the .40 suppressor with the 9mm if you had the proper barrel.  I'll let you know what Gem-Tech's reply is as soon as I get one.

I'd still like to hear from .40 cal suppressor owners, or witnesses.

I have heard the Evo 9 and the Evo 40 shot side by side (along with the Evo 45 if anyone cares).

9 was signficantly quieter than the 40 and night and day difference between the 9 and 45.

Evo 9 is pretty close to movie silencer quiet... along with suppressed .308 from a bolt gun, and .22LR suppressors.

.40S&W is pretty loud but better than unsuppressed... and the .45ACP isn't worth suppressing IMO.

I have the Evo-45, it is sick quiet wet to me,I have the Evo-9 but havent shot it yet.45's in general are hard to suppress but AAC's new Black Box is supposed to be hearing safe dry.

I took my EVO 9 over and let my dad and brother shoot it.  They were amazed at how quiet it was both wet and dry.  We were shooting an unsuppressed .22 as well, and boy did that .22 sound loud compared to the suppressed 9.  It's pretty much just the noise of the action cycling + minimal pop from the gunshot.

It does not suppress well. AWC and AAC and some others make a 40 can but its loud. It doesn't help that its a fat cartridge bordering a .45.

Want hollyweird quiet?

Wait for the the New AAC and get that in 45 and wish for the best.

OR wait and ask them if they can make it in .40

I have heard it and it was quiet annoying in sound but it wasn't a gun shot.

I think everyone was just hypnotized by the sirens when the 40 came to town.

Likewise...I am sorry to say..it's just not a good suppressor round.

Go 9 or below or wait for the AAC dry can in .45

Yup, we're closed for the holidays. If you are coming to SHOT then come by our booth and see the redesigned BLACKSIDE-40. We debuted the preproduction BLACKSIDE-40 at SHOT last year. It was based off the unboosted BLACKSIDE-45 however, in working with some of our Federal clients they preferred a prototype boosted BLACKSIDE-40 that we had developed. Also, with the introduction of several new .40 handguns last year (most notably the S&W M&P in .40) we decided, prior to full production of the unboosted BLACKSIDE-40 to go to a boosted version. The booster is an entirely new design that differs from our previous LID. We anticipate the BLACKSIDE-40 will be available for delivery at the end of Q1 07.

Yes, the .40 suppressor can be used on 9mm. The hard part is finding a 9mm barrel that is threaded in 9/16-24 or M14.5x1.

Happy New Year,

Owen

On AAC's site at the bottom of the homepage under articles, there are some writeups about the Evo-9 and Evo-40. The 40 metered well on the Glock (132 db IIRC), but the 9 was better (125 IIRC). That said, I'm planning on suppressing my 40 in the near future. Big punch, nearly all available ammo is subsonic, etc.
