I was also wondering how many preban mags people have. I just bought 5 more, 30rounders. I have one orlite, which I don't like, but I have it, and I have 1 20 rounder Colt. So that will be 7 and damn, I want to buy more! Get em while I can! Mine are all for my AR15!
Link Posted: 6/12/2002 9:42:39 PM EDT
I don't know... I lost count.
Link Posted: 6/12/2002 9:44:16 PM EDT
Why do you dislike your Orlite?
Link Posted: 6/12/2002 9:50:46 PM EDT
It would take me to long to count!
It would be in the hundreds.
Link Posted: 6/12/2002 10:23:18 PM EDT
What is the number (in the lower left corner)on your Orlite?

Troy has enough to supply two Marine Expeditionary Forces....

I have a bunch but still not enough. Equally mixed between 20's and 30's, all GI.

I've only got 25 USGI mags in my meager collection. Do you believe my wife had the nerve to roll her eyes when I told her I needed more!!!

Mags are like money, you can never have too much...

Later!

Link Posted: 6/13/2002 5:10:42 AM EDT
As many as I will ever need:

6 Okay 30 rounders for 2 3-mag pouches
1 Adventureline 30 rounder: for the mag well
4 Orlites: 3 in a mag pouch, 1 loaded and ready
1 Colt 20 round for prone shooting
1 U.S.A. (aack!) 5 round for hunting

My take on it is this: If I ever purchase another AR15 type rifle, I might consider more, but in the mean time, I can only carry so much at one time. Of course, their trade value might be a consideration if they ever dry up or get banned.

How many do soldiers carry at one time?

I'm a mag chump, but I'm working on it!

3 30rnd Thermolds (US)
18 USGI 30rnd
1 USGI 20rnd
6 worthless crap USA 20rnd TARGETS (Yes, I still feel the BURN!)

Edited: Forgot, 2 Bushy 10rnd mags.
Link Posted: 6/13/2002 7:18:11 AM EDT
I think I have about 2 dozen 30 round Thermolds -- might be a couple more or less than that. In any case, I figure with that amount, it'll be a while before I'll have to start recharging them with the ammo I've got on stripper clips. BTW, as a subject of the PRK, that's all I'm ever going to get to own -- which is why I'm a fan of stripper clips and charging guides.

I feel like you can never have enough.
I just keep buying them. I have a lot
of 40 rounders but a few have feeding issues.
I mark those and don't use them.
30 rounders are what I focus on.
I have ? 30 rounders.
Just a few 20's.
Link Posted: 6/13/2002 7:44:18 AM EDT
I forced myself to stop at 25. 15 are NIW USGI tucked away in an ammocan for a rainy day. Six are fully loaded, ready to go. The other four are Orlites and Thermolds. I use them for fu**ing around. I have the new Bushy 10rd mag that I use at formal ranges. So, I guess I have 26. No more for me. Buying more ammo.
Link Posted: 6/13/2002 7:57:41 AM EDT
I stopped for awhile at a 100 ... then kept going.
Link Posted: 6/13/2002 8:17:58 AM EDT
I think in realilty may 10 to 20 would be suffient. You can't carry all of them if you had to bug out for some reason or another. You can't use everyone of them at the range and why would you. I would have on hand 10 to 20 of the best ones I could find.
Link Posted: 6/13/2002 8:29:07 AM EDT
Right now I'm sittin hear lookin at 13.

1-5rnd
1-20rnd
11-30rnd

But I just ordered 5-20rnd and 4-30rnd.
I am picking up a few every month until I think I've got enough.
Link Posted: 6/13/2002 8:39:27 AM EDT
At least 10 for each rifle. And 5 hicaps for each pistol.
Link Posted: 6/13/2002 10:03:42 AM EDT

FWIW- 13 USGI 30's is a managable load to carry on your duce gear, 1 in the rifle, and 12 in the pouches.

Go to the library. Make a copy of your DL. Snail Mail it to Eric. Once he has it on file, go nuts....

I gave Lotboy 2 USGI 20's.

Now he has SEVEN Mags!
Link Posted: 6/13/2002 3:31:30 PM EDT
Only about 40 GI 30rdrs,5 Thermolds,4 Orlites,10 GI 20 rdrs and a beta c.But now that I've got my 3rd AR it's time to pick up another 20 30rdrs.Luckily for me I've got a source where I live for 80-95% GI 30rdrs for $12 if I buy 15 or 20 at a time.
Link Posted: 6/13/2002 4:06:30 PM EDT
Last count was 120 to 140 with a 50/50 split 20's to 30's. That doesn't count the ones I hid and keep finding.
Link Posted: 6/13/2002 9:40:48 PM EDT
Go belt fed dont have to worry about carrying mags just alot of ammo.
Link Posted: 6/14/2002 6:43:23 AM EDT
I served in the Marines we were issued six 30 rounders,I am of the opinion that a bare minimum of magazines for your ar15 rifle is 7 30's,a combat load with one in your rifle ready to go.
I think it would be ideal for you to have 14 per rifle though to replace ones that break or if for some reason you lose them,"mag retention is a must".
For the M1a or Fal its the same 7 and 14 per rifle.
But really truly more is better.
Link Posted: 6/15/2002 6:20:17 AM EDT
...agree with tdkak, but for me, 'collecting' mags is a continuous process...
Link Posted: 6/15/2002 6:22:33 AM EDT
also in the few 'Leg' units I served in 7 mags (210 rds) was considered a 'Basic Load', while at bragg and elsewhere we always carried a lot more, talk about some heavy web gear!!!!
Link Posted: 6/15/2002 7:26:06 AM EDT
I have maybe a little over a hundred - about 75% 30 rounders. Most are is storage or SHTF ready. I keep about 20 for shooters.

I have an M16 (with a second in process) and 2 Ars to feed so you can't have enough mags.

This comming from a guy that has 3 dozen mags for the Vector Arms Uzi and another 3 dozen mags for the Norrell 10/22.

4-5 dozen for the FALs (they are cheap). Alas, I only have 6 20 rounders for my KAC SR-25 (not only expensive but hard to find).

I also have about 10 mags per handgun.

Remember, without functioning quality mags your gun is a single shot.
Link Posted: 6/17/2002 12:22:16 AM EDT
4 30rd usgi
1 thermold
5 20 rders

3 30rd ak mags

i seem to have a preference for the 20rd ar mags..easier to use on the bench.

For the range and just messing around:

10 Orlites
1 GI 30 rd
2 Colt 20 rd
12 steel 30 rd (all work)
4 steel 40 rd (all work)

Plan to add at least one 20 or 30 rd GI to this group every time I go to a gun show from now on.

For SHTF

9 new US made Thermolds
120 excellent or new 30 rd GI
20 20 rd GI (all but one is a like new Colt)

I started buying mags here about a week before I bought my first AR from Cav Arms. I have:

1 Orlite 30
2 English 30's (Steel)
4 USGI 30's
1 USGI 20
2 DPMS 10's

I'm ordering 4 more of the English mags next week and I'm trying to find a good source for new Orlites. The Orlite just looks/works great with the polymer CAV-15 lower.

Yeah but you have to have some for your friends. Thats like saying 10-20 AR's is sufficient
Link Posted: 7/25/2002 5:23:58 AM EDT
I'm a newbie, so only have 7 so far. I just sold 2 Orlites thought so I can buy some more. I'd like to work my way up to a couple hundred, while there's still enough out there to keep the price reasonable. My wife thinks I'm crazy.

I had 30 FN hi-caps, but a friend is "converting" 23 of them in a C-Mag. Sounded like a good deal, so I went for it.
So no I have to get me some more 30 rounders.

C-2-6
Link Posted: 7/25/2002 5:44:08 AM EDT
About 10 20's, maybe 6 30's. I should probably get some more 30's, but I've been more concentrating on 20's because I use them for matches. Next gun show I'll try to stock up a little if I find a good price.

And 3 hi-caps for my Beretta, a couple mags for my Walther. Probably a dozen mags for my M1 Carbine, mix of 15's and 30's. Lots of Garand clips.
Link Posted: 7/25/2002 2:06:09 PM EDT
The rule of thumb I follow is to buy a weapon and then spend at least half of the purchase price purchasing extra magazines.

Of course, that depends on the weapon. I was able to lay in a pretty hefty supply of USGI AR-15 mags for about what I payed for my rifle. I also bought a C-Mag for the Hell of it. My M1A is another story entirely. I only have 8 mags for it right now, but I've found that carrying that many mags is about all I can handle (along with 160 rounds in strippers for replenishment).

Thirtysomething AR's.

Maybe I will pick up a couple more next month.
Link Posted: 7/25/2002 4:45:34 PM EDT

OK. 14 30rnd USGI of various manuf.
5 Colt 20 rnds that I use at the range.
1 BM that takes up space

Stepped-init
