My folks have a farm and I've set up a 120 yard shooting range in the woods behind it.  I am concerned though that with the amount of shooting I do that I might be pissing of the neighbors.  To that end, I'm thinking about getting a .17HMR rifle.  How loud is one of these really?  Is it (loudness wise) closer to a .22LR or a 5.7mm round (the closest things I have experience with)?

You think so? I find them perceptibly louder than a .22lr and CCI Stingers.

I don't think it is much louder than a .22.

if the neighbors are close enough to hear anything more than a "distant gunshot" that's not a farm,  it's a garden.

you'll be fine with a .17 HMR.  it's about like a .22 or .22 mag.
oh, and get a 45-70.  as long as you can legally shoot and it's not nighttime the neighbors can't do a damn thing about it.

It's way louder than a .22. I shot mine the other day for the first time without hearing protection and it WILL leave you ringing. I'd say it's closer to 5.7 noise level than 22, and I'd bet it can be heard within a 1/4 mile.

Out of a rifle I find the .17hmr to be louder than .22lr, but not as quite as loud as a .22mag.

Louder than a .22.
I hit my neighbor's threshold after around 600 rounds the first week that I had it.
I agreed to tone it down.

You can build a sound damper out of a blue plastic 50 gal drum and some foam. PM my and I'll tell you how.  JP

It is louder than a .22LR but not as loud as a .223.

Well, it really depends on your length of bbl here, but it is basically like a 22 mag, with a higher pitch.  Even though it comes out a small hole, it is going about 2600 to 2700 fps!!! So it's gonna crack.  You may want to consider the 17 mach 2; ammo is only slightly more expensive than 22lr, and you get a laser shot, just not quite so much so as the hmr.  Plus you can fire 17 Aguila rounds through a mach 2...

^^ this. It is just below my threshold for hearing protection. Any louder and the ear muffs go on. .17HMR has a definate "CRACK". Way more than a .22lr.

I must have hearing issues I have never had one ring my ears. Were you shooting under shelter in an enclosed area?

HAHA I think that is a great idea. Like Grizz said if your legal and not at night get as loud as you want. When someone comes to your door to say something about it , tell them to meet you out back then continue shooting at a backstop or target with the loudest weapon you have

Picked up a CZ452 American in .17HMR and topped it with a Leupold Rimfire scope.  This is *exactly* what I've been looking for.  Thanks for your input guys.

I'm sure it is considerably louder than using .22 sub sonics.  Any sub sonics or match ammo out of my 22 rifles almost sounds suppressed...no sonic crack since sub sonics and match travel less than 1100 fps.
