Be safe and cut it to the back of the round lenght. So from the back in of the barrel(chamber area) to the bussiness end. 18"

It is measured from the muzzle to the bolt face. Legal limit for a shotgun barrel is 18".

On a shotgun ALL THE TIME! On a rifle well I leave that to a smith as I want it crowned properly as to help keep it as accurate as possible.

As far as how the barrell is measured BATFE uses a wooden or plastic rod that is dropped down the barrell from the buisness end while the bolt is closed and the gun is unloaded if it is 18 inches on a shotgun then you are good if it is 16 on a rifle then you are good. There may be some STATES that require different lengths so check local laws!

Can you say 'test case'?
That one would be a real doozie, too, and I would imagine that the individual with the gun would win.

So long as there is 18" represented on your barrels overall legnth, they would have a helluva time trying to hassle you for it. It's perfectly legal to have 14.5" of AR15 barrel so long as there is a 'muzzle attachment' that is permanently affixed to bring it up to the legal 16"+.

No, see, YOU are the one claiming that there has been a case that addresses the details of cutting a barrel at an angle where one part is over 18" and some is less.
The reason I cannot cite chapter and verse is because I am not the one who made the claim that such a case existed.
The reason you cannot cite chapter and verse is ???
Hell, I don't even want chapter and verse. A simple case number would be fine.
Fuck, screw the case number. Just give me the state it was tried in.
Hell, I don't even need that.
How about the district.
A few first names of parties involved?
Anything?

You contended what I said by saying:

It is my understanding that this has, in fact, been tested and won in court by BATF(E) in years past.

and I would like to know what lead you to understand that.
Was it a guy in an orange hat at the gunshow?

Maybe it was "they".
"They" said it, you overheard it, and now you believe it.
The infamous and omnipresent "they" spoke of a case where an individual cut a barrel at an angle where 18" in length was still represented, and lost in court.

FYI, Its not a dumb question. Its a keep your ass out of the federal pen question. Be safe, go 18 1/2. My father had a smith in TX cut one down for him. The smith wouldnt go any shorter than 18 1/2.
