I haven't bought one yet, but it seems like I can save a lot of money getting into it.
What should I look for when I buy one?
Is there more to it than just replacing the stock?

seems like alot of times replacement stocks that arent bubba'ed can cost an arm and a leg.

It's going to depend on what you have to start with. Some just have the stock cut down or replaced. Others could have all sorts of modifications to the barrels, sights, etc. Which variant you want to do will factor into it, as well. Typically, you can buy one in standard form, for the same money, or less, than it would cost to refurb a sporter that has been fully decked out (read F'd up).

If metal has been drilled or cut, I stay away.  If only wood has been dicked with, then the economics of the restoration are favorable.

1903's are a bit harder to do then the A3's since most of the sporterized 1903's I"ve seen have been heavily modified to remove the sights and other parts forward of the reciever.  The A3's I've seen mostly have redone stocks, irons removed, and D&T for a scope base....if you find one of those they'd be good for a repo 1903a4 project.
