None of my manuals give directions on how to do this and I have never needed to remove one before. It is the pin that keeps the buffer in the stock that you see when you split the recievers apart.

They are held in by the "buffer tube".

You need to take of the stock and start to remove the "buffer tube".

Amen to that!  I had the little thing go taking off across the shop and was lucky to find it.  Not as bad as the time I launched a pivot pin detent though .
