i would like to take a shot at painting a camo pattern on the stock and handgaurd of my ar...is there a certain type of paint that works best for this, and is there anything i can put on it to keep it from easily scratching off?

Use enamel spray paint. It works great.

I used Brownell's Alumahyde II to paint my A2 stock set OD green.

It works fine, but takes about a week to cure.
