I know  the quality from Remington was shotty a while back.  Does anyone have any more recent experience with new 336s?  I saw one today with parkerized finish and it was really nice, but I'm still worried about the quality inside.

Good lord, man, with tens of thousands of wonderful old Marlins out there in pawnshops, gunshops, gunshows, etc., for less than the new crap, why would you possibly settle for one of the new ones?

Hit the pawnshops and find yourself a good pre-safety Marlin or Westernfield. You won't be sorry.

Fpni

Plus, no safety on the older Marlins

i have a 150 rounds through my month old remlin. none of my local pawn or gun shops had any older marlins, and haven't for the last 4 months. so I pulled the trigger on a new one. my only complaints are the 9-10lb factory trigger and the laminate stock. I fixed the trigger pull issue (thanks to marlin forum) and now it's down to 3-4 lbs. I also slicked up the action while I was in there. and it made a world of difference in the feel of the rifle.

I'm glad you're happy with your new .30-30. For those who are worried about current production, there are other options:

BTW, don't overlook the private label equivalents such as Westernfield, Revelation, etc. My .30-30 is marked Westernfield, but made by Marlin (says so right on the barrel) and is every bit as good as any old Marlin.

To answer the OP's question I bought a new 336Y about a year ago and it is a fine little rifle. No issues at all.

I realize that this is a small sample size, but it is my actual personal experience.

Why take the chance on a new one? I still read of issues, especially on their big bore guns having cracked receivers under the barrel.

I won't touch them.

Also look for Glenfields, which were Marlins budget line.

I wouldn't touch a new Rem-lin with a ten foot pole.  I've looked over about two dozen of them since Remington took over and would have rejected every single one.

Same here. The only thing on mine I wasn't thrilled with was the blueing. It just looked a little shallow to me. I didn't care because I bought the gun to have it parkerized. I have bought  two Remlins. Both have been fine.
