A cardboard case of regular boxed 22lr is a nice handy size and weight and holds 5000 rounds (10 bricks) . Why folks feel they have a need to take perfectly well packed ammo and rip it all apart to have it clanging around in a ammo can is beond me. I don't know about you guys but I live in a house and am not worried about rain getting on my ammo storage.
If the SHTF to the extent that I need to bug out I might pack up a couple of cans but I can't carry all my ammo .
Last time I de-boxed any ammo I was 10 years old and dumped 6 or 8 tubes of bbs into a glass peanut butter jar (this alone tells you how long ago it was!) and ran up the stairs and tripped and fell at the top smashing the jar!

I've been putting my loose ammo in those Planters Peanut plastic jugs with the screw on lids. I can get 1200 rounds of .22 and 250 rounds of .223 in one. I use a couple of disecant bags in each one for moisture control. I eat the hell out of peanuts and after my basement flooded I lost about 3000 rounds. I figured I'd get some use out of the empties.

I know you asked about loose pack, but 16 of the CCI 100-round plastic boxes fit perfectly in a .30 can, stacked on end.  I label them and keep a few hundred each of different ammo types in them, that way when we go to the range, we just need to grab that can and if we want to try different ammo, it's all there.

a brick of .22 thunderbolts also fits nicely in a .50 cal fattie, but i also had some boxes of 12 gauge put in there too.
