RL-15 or Varget. If you can find some.

Consider TAC also.

+1

But I am playing around with TAC to see how that does.

I agree. My shop had 2 8lb kegs of Varget this week. Regrettably I could only afford one of them. But at least I can go back to my favorite heavy bullet powder instead of messing with VV140 an RL15.

24.0 gr Varget
or
23.5 gr TAC

Winchester SR primer
Winchester case
2.245" OAL

If you want an even better long range load, substitute into the recipe the Sierra 80 gr MatchKing bullet seated 0.010" off your lands. You have to single load them but they do better at extended distances.

~24.0 grains of Varget

I use BL(C)-2 to push my 75 gr pills.

RL-15, second choice(s): N140 or Varget

Thanks for the info guys! I get the idea that powder is as hard to find as primers in some areas. I was at the gun show here in San Antonio yesterday and found my usual reloading guy stocked up to his eyeballs with just about every powder anyone would need! Needless to say he was pulling in cash like an icecream stand in hell!

Mike...any idea of the velocity you are getting out of a 20" barrel with the TAC or Varget loadings?

Thanks...

I think I was getting around 2700 fps from my 20" gun using Varget. I don't recall the exact loading. I went for accuracy over velocity.

24gr of Varget was close to what I was using, I think. Consult your manual or the reloading section here.

24.0 gn of Varget seems to be the sweet spot for 75-77 gn bullets. Of course that's pretty much close to a max load, so just be careful getting there.

With the Varget, I get 2500 fps from a 16" RRA barrel and 2800 fps from a 26" Krieger. That would put a 20" barrel at about 2650 fps but I don't have a 20" barrel with which to test.

The load using TAC is about 100 fps faster from both barrels.

Thanks...just wanted a point of reference...I am sitting on a bunch of TAC....

My once fired Prvi brass with AA2520 run 2750 thru a 20" Lilja and 2600 fps thru a 16" SS barrel

AA2495 is another consideration. I have not tested the loads I have built at 20.0 and 21.0 grains yet but if they are like any of the other 223 loads I have built with Accurate Arms Powders they should give good results. While the 2495 grains are not short cut they meter easily through my RCBS Unilfow Measure. Another Powder I am considering building some rounds with and testing is IMR 3031. VV N140 is also a great powder that is versatile and produces tight groups in both 223 and 308. If you can't get Hodgden Powder Consider some old school powders like IMR 4064,4320,4895, and even the newer 4007.

Me two, 25.0 grains to be exact with the Hornady 75 grain BTHP Match bullet.

With 23.5 gr I was running about 2750 fps +/-. I have loaded up to 24gr of TAC behind the 75 before, but can't remember what the velocity was and it was starting to get maxish.

Ramshots 5.56 data for the 77gr bullets show (20" barrel)

Bullet weight: 77 grain HP.
Start load: 22.1 grains (2525 – 2625 Ft/p/sec)
Maximum load: 24.5 grains (2750 – 2850 Ft/p/sec). <62000 Psi

My Hornady data says 2.235. Has anyone tried that lenght, and should I seat them longer? Not trying to hijack.

I use 24.0 RE15
