I just picked up two NIB rilfes, a Socom 16 and an MSAR.  I don't have any ammo for either so I want to get rid of one to fund ammo, magazine and parts for the other.  I am having troubles deciding, so I figured I would ask here.  Which would you choose to keep?

What other guns/calibers do you have?
I vote keep both.

keep both!

If you get rid of one now, you will regret it in the future.

I have no other rifles at the moment just those two and my Glock.

I sold my MSAR, besides buying it; the lost money is the only other regret.....
KEEP the Socom 16
It will always be worth what you payed.

Keep the MSAR.

Don't get me wrong, the SOCOM is a nice rifle, but there are other .308 rifles out there that are lighter and easier to mount optics to.

Let me ask you this: What is your plan to use the SOCOM for? CQB? Medium range rifle? Long range rifle? Or all of them?

Depends on what you want it for.

If you're gonna do hunting, definitely the M1A. If you're looking for a plinking gun, the MSAR. If you're trying to impress the old hats at the range, the M1A. If you're trying to impress the younger hipsters, the MSAR.

I've got one buddy that has the M1A, and another has the MSAR. The guy with the M1A has taken a boar with his (iron sights to boot); the guy with the MSAR decided it wasn't go-to enough and bought a Spikes AR.

You'll be pissed that you rid your self of either one. Save up, buy ammo and mags, be happy. The day you see one of these weapons on the range...and you no longer own it...you'll be sorry. Those weapons WILL hold there valure over the long run if you take care of them. Can't say that for many things. Shoot them, clean them, and buy hi-cap mags.

This. I used M14's in the Navy (yes, that was a *long* time ago) and have a great deal of respect for the platform. However, MSAR's fit *my* particular needs better so that's what occupies my gunsafe (YMMV).

Don't sell either. Buy ammo when you can. Hell, sell a kidney.

I'd keep both... ammo and parts can be picked up here and there when funds allow.

Thanks for the responses guys.  But I think this decision was made easier for me.  The person I got it from, after having discussions with his wife, wants to cancel our deal and get his MSAR back.  Basically he is cool with it but his wife isn't.  I am a nice guy and don't want this issue to become something bigger between him and his spouse so I think I am just going to give him the MSAR back.  I will either get ammo from him for the M1A or my old rifle back.  We will see, thanks guys.

I'll just say this and leave it at that.....At least Springfield will have someone answer the phone when you call.

Yeah, I'd leave it at that. Personally, I would never own another MSAR. I had two... A IV gen STG and an E4. Both were nothing but trouble. I also had a SOCOM 16 that I sold when I got laid off, and I still miss it. ymmv

I like the M14, but the SOCOM is not my bag. Of those tow, I'd keep the MSAR. I'd likely sell both and get something else.

Split the difference and get a MSAR in 7.62x39

After picking up both of those guns I'd just assume buy a small amount right now to get you buy and just slowly stock up over the next year on ammo.

Surely you have other guns to shoot to get you buy?

I LOVE the M14/M1A.... that being said I don't see the point of a short bbl .308.  Its a great round, but too heavy recoil (for follow-up shots), and too heavy ammo for an assault rifle/carbine.  Its more of a semi-auto battle rifle/semi-auto sniper weapon (if you used the standard bbl and added an optic for sniper use).  The .308 round is too expensive for rapid fire too.  Its much better used as a longer range weapon.

I would keep the MSAR, and buy a standard M1A.

His wife isn't cool with selling off one of the guns?  Sweet wife!
