I know they make one in .223, so a 7.62x39 would seem to be a natural extension.

yea i checked it but those are not listed and it says "We do not sell barrel blanks or do custom calibers. "
Does anyone know the cost to rebarrell or rechamber to one of these cartridges? |

If the NEF were available in say 308 Win the re-chambering to 7.62 x 54R might be feasible. The problem is that the 308 is ballistically equivalent or even superior to the 7.62 x 54R. Not sure it would make any sense with 7.62 x 54R ammo being hard to find on occasion. Charles.

funny thing is, i was asking myself the same exact question about the Handi-Rifle in 7.62X54!! they're not available in those calibers through NEF/H&R the rifle you're referring to is called the handi-rifle i wanted to get one of these in 30/30 or .44 mag and send it back to them and get a spare 45/70 or .22 Hornet installed and properly headspaced by them |

30.06 barrel and a chamber insert will bring the ak ammo into play. A mod that is removable.

I thought Russian .30cal stuff was .312 and American was .308.
Doesn't this lead to excessive chamber pressure squeezing an oversized pill down the bore? |

No. pull a bullet and mike it. Less than 3 thousands of a diff here. It has not caused a problem in 10,000 M1 Garands, 30.06 to .308 ....

What??????? The 308 win and 30/06 both use .308 diameter bullets. You force a .312 bullet down a .308 bore and the working presure of the round is going to go threw the roof (including parts of the barrel if the .312 ammo is already loaded for normal working pressures in a .312 bore). |

But wait I realize match ammo is manufactured differently. And the bullets considered .308 can size differently up to .005 +- So what wea are really getting at is that the calibre of .308 can varry +- .005 depending on manufacture. Well, does that cover .312? Well yes it does. Guess what All three wolf bullets in 7.62x39 I pulled are smaller than .312. Gee go figure. Now that I can make an informed piece of advice to the gentleman who asked the question. How about this. I shoot on occation 7.62 x 39 thru a .308 handi rifle once in a while. I also shoot .308 thru a 30.06 once in a blue moon. So when the back seat drivers get done GLOCK KA-booming my recomendations please rest assured that 7.62x39 can be safely fired thru a handi rifle. There ya went and made me angry enough to have to reasearch some stuff, and just not go by my previous experience. Well Jesus CHerisT! OMY GAWD!!!!! OOOOOHHHHHJJJEEEEEEEZ! I guess my three rifles I use chamber inserts in should blow up every time I use them!!!! If you have not USED the Fuc&ing inserts do not offer opinions. You opinionated morons. |

Caliber 30 Model 1906 "Springfield" bullets are .308" wide (except those
that are .307" or .3085" for various manufacturing reasons. |

Not talking about the inserts, where talking about the size of the bore.
American .308 bores are .308'ish from the bottom of the grooves to the other bottom of the other groove (not the lands). Imported bores like the 303, 7.62 X 39 and 7.62 x54R have bores from groove to groove of .312'ish. When a .308 bullet is fired down a .312 bore, the gas pressure is blown by since the bullet does not seal off the grooves (read working barrel pressures are lessened). On the other hand, when .312 bullets are fired down a .308 bore, the bullet has to slug it's self down from the normal .312 to the .308 size, and addition working barrel pressure is created. Simple put, if you fire a .312 round that creates 50,000 psi in a .312 bore, through a bore of .308, the working pressure or the round is going to go up no less than 15,000, and you are now shooting loads at proof levels. Again, there are two different types of bores in the 7.62 range. One is the .308 diameter, the second is the .312 diameter. Due to this, 7.62 bullets are grouped into these two ranges, and each group should not be confused with the other. Regarding Wolf ammo, some of the 7.62 X39 ammo is actual loaded with the .308 bullets instead of the .312. The reasoning behind this is that the ammo can be shoot threw both bores without out causing excessive working pressures. |

FYI: I worked at a foundry when NEI was H&R. We made the receivers and they are cast iron…
I am not implying any problem for they have been in use with their rifles and pistols for 30+ years that I know of. Just FYI. |

Wolf ammo is loaded with a .310 dia bullet (7.62x 39 and 7.62 x54r). they use .308 for the american/ NATO cartridges. Barnaul is the same, and Prvi of Serbia, and Lapua of Finland. the .312 bullet is for the .303 british and a couple of other obsolete calibers. now when you measure the actual bore diameter of ComBloc 7.62 they run from .308-.312, and on rare occasions .315 (only heard never seen the .315). this is because the QC of the soviets wasn't what it should have been. they were supposed to be .310-.311. heard conflicting info on this, but is generally recognized to be .310. The Finns have both .308 and .310 7.62x54r loads depending on when/ and what it was chambered in, but the finn 7.62x39 is .310.
now if you were to buy one of NEf Handi-rifles in 30-30 i wouldn't think that it would be too difficult to re-chamber it to 7.62x54r. It would probably be able to handle the .310 bullet down it's .308 bore without any problems. however, accuracy would more than likely suck. that is why the first ruger mini-30s had such a bad reputation for accuracy. when ruger switched from the .308 bore to a .310 the accuracy really improved. ETA: the guy that said bullets can run +/- .005 inch is just plain ignorant! (.0005 yes, but not .005) |
