Appreciate the links. I knew about HKparts.net and they don't have barrels. Centermass doesnt either.
I think I read somewhere that the extension on the 416 barrel is different than that of the MR556 so one wouldn't fit the other, etc. I'm worried about buying something that I could potentially shoot out and then i'd just have an expensive paper weight because I couldn't get a spare.
You are correct. 416 and MR556 barrels are not interchangeable.
You will have a very difficult time finding a spare barrel for a 416 in any length. Sources for 416 uppers -and hence individual spare parts- are drying up because HK has adjusted their sales policies to prevent their resale on the civilian market. If you get lucky finding a stripped barrel, that luck will stop dead with the price, likely in the the $2000 range.
HK will only sell such things to bonafide end-users. I don't even think an HK LE dealer could get one. Best to protect what you have...
Exactly what i was afraid of. Doesn't make much sense to buy something if you cant ever really shoot it though, does it? I really don't understand why we all continue to love HK when they're such dicks...
HK gets a bad rap. They are beholden to German federal law on top of EU laws and US import laws, and that's mainly why they seem so anti-civilian in policy. They have to put forth an effort to enforce their German side or the German govt could make things worse for them.
Understand, but surely they could make a barrel extension that would be universal to all their 5.56 weapons to allow for interchangeability? Seems like they intentionally design products to keep them out of civilian hands. Its kinda like Benelli and their ridiculous policy not to offer the collapsible stock on the M4 to civilians.
That's German law, not their choice. Generally speaking, they cannot export civilian arms or parts from Germany that are compatible with military arms. That's why they have to modify the HK416 away from the MR556 and others. The MR556 is made here, but the 416 is made in Germany and exported. Tough situation for everyone...
ETA: German law is stricter then EU and actually extends across the ocean and even our border. HK USA and all its subsidiaries all have to abide by many of the laws governing their German parent. Despite the MR556 being manufactured here, there was quite a negotiation with the German authorities over the rifle's specs. There was a time when they were going to make the MR556 upper and lower receivers unique and incompatible with US mil,-spec in compliance with German regulation, but they -and we- won.
