My local gun shop told me it would cost 35-40 bucks to ship my handgun from his shop to another. is this to much or about right? does it depend on location? I'm in a smaller town (about 3000 people). thanks for your help.

That is average for sending a pistol through a gun shop in my area as well.  Before they ship they will transfer the firearm into their name and then you figure $17 to $20 to ship priority with insurance.

Depends on the size of the package - some handgun cases are a bit large for a flat rate box, others fit nicely.  Expensive handguns will be a few bucks more for the added insurance coverage.
