Using xjronx's post as inspiration, I have been testing out the abilities of my cheap NVGs.

I want to eventually upgrade everything, but first I wanted to learn and play...

Crap I guess I'll have to re-do it.

In the last sequence you should be able to see the bright dot reduces to a subtle non-blooming dot on the black background.  To show this I passed my hand in front of the laser so the dot disappears.  It's easier to see if you open the video in YouTube instead of watching it in this embedded version.

But yes, it works.  I tested it out the back door at about 75 yards, and though it was about 6" in diameter I could see it fine.

I'm waiting on some 30mm flip cap flashlight IR filters to test.  Once I have those I could be able to make a better video.

excellent. thats what I thought I was seeing but I wasnt sure.

what you were able to show is that your inexpensive dpss green laser contains enough unfiltered residual IR to produce a IR dot under night vision once the visible green is filtered out. you have all the benefits of a dual beam system for about $50.

That's pretty awesome.  Is it essentially the same laser as xjronx's?  Did you harden the driver and everything else?  This is tempting...

Awesome.  Is it possible to harden the original laser module, or would you suggest to just replace it and not bother with the original?

I couldn't disassemble the module that came stock in mine. But its difficult to say what will be in another one purchased from a different supplier. you could definitely epoxy the driver board on. the biggest problem I had was caused by heat I think. that green light you filter out is reflected somewhere, and I think it caused the original crystal and expander in the laser to come unglued. for the $9 I paid for a replacement module I just went with that.

one of the two I made failed while it was in storage. I think my bridge on the switch on the driver failed but I havent dissected it to examine it yet.

What size caps fit the laser?

EvilBetty, have you tested whether or not yours has a POI shift?  I know in the xjronx's original post he mentioned his
had no shift.

I'm waiting on the IR flip caps from China to test POI and heat build up.  I plan on using these primarily with a momentary switch so I'm hoping heat won't be much of a issue.

What is the diameter of the head?  What size lens caps fit it?

ETA Just ordered the sight and a 77mm 950nm filter from Amazon.  I'll order the laser module
and lens cap soon.

I just checked my receipt, I used butler creek 02 caps. the head is about an 1 3/16".

the "sample" of polycarbonate filter material I used was only about $4 shipped. the link to it is in my thread that the OP linked to. its easy to cut and trim and the sample size is big enough to use for several projects.

Head of mine was exactly 30mm on the caliper.  Ordered 30mm flashlight IR pass filters, should be here any day.

The Amazon filters I ordered were 25mm.

Thanks for the info on the cap.

I just ordered 2 20mw modules from DX.

The laser sight should be here tomorrow or the next day.

I received the laser and lens today.  I did some informal testing by holding the lens up to the laser with the lights
off looking through my old Night Owl monocular.  Definitely an IR dot present.  It will probably be after Thanksgiving
before I take this project any further because I'm heading out of town Thursday for the K-State game then deer
season.  Hopefully by the time I get back after Thanksgiving the laser modules will be here.  I ordered them from
DX Soul, Deal Extreme's American site that was slightly more expensive but supposedly ships quicker.

I see green laser modules available for 5,10,20,30,50,100 & 200 mw. is there any advantage to one over the others besides price?

I found that the 10mw green produced a better dot than the 20mw iirc.

with the cheapo chinese dpss green lasers, the power rating might not just be pure green, but a combo of IR plus green. so a 10mw green might actually be ~ 7mw green and ~3mw of IR. just as an example. using a makeshift powermeter the 10mw was puttting out less than 1 mw of ir THROUGH the filter I USED. but dont quite me on that.

for safety reasons, for both your device and your eyes, i'd stick with 20mw or less. the modules I purchased came from Wall Buys. I was able to fully disassemble them. they have a push button power switch that needs to be bypassed.

http://wallbuys.com/Product/SD-100-10mW-Green-Laser-Module-w-springGolden-7790

this is the fikter material i used. it begins blocking at 720nm and is blocking x% at 800nm.
mine was part number 9K020, but I cannot find that now.
they show another part # 9m020 and its listed as ir transmitting.
http://www.acrylite-shop.com/US/us/index.htm

edit to add, the 9m020 is listed as corresponding to 1146-0,  ir transmission rate for which is shown here:

I just got the same green laser setup off of amazon for under $25.00 shipped. I was able to unscrew the laser from this unit without damaging it so am going to run with it for now as it is very bright! This one takes a Butler Creek Flip-Open Objective Scope Cover, Size 02 1.221  from what I measured (dotty posted a size 23 must have been missing my glasses) so just ordered it and got a  LEE Filters LE8733 3x3" Infra Red #87 Infrared Polyester Filter for $13.00 shipped from B&H photo. A review showed it only passes 900nm and up so it may not work, but will see if it does. The plastic sheet from www.acrylite-shop.com ran more for shipping than the sheet did. around $30.00 so when the cheaper rout.
I was looking at the diagram that xjronx posted of the laser in the post he started and it shows an ir filter in front of the expanding lens on the laser. Does this lens filter out or pass IR?
Link Posted: 11/23/2014 6:31:45 PM EDT
[#22]
A quality dpss green laser should have an ir filter, but many of the cheaper chinese modules do not. I suspect they allow the IR to pass in order to give a higher output on paper.

I'm curious if your filter will work. i suspect the IR we are seeing if 808nm, one of the most common diodes out there, but there could be some 1064nm in there too. your 900 pass filter will let us know (if your device sees that high).

the acrylite site has or had "sample pieces", the size of a post card for under $5 shipped.

Just finished doing the hardening upgrade and would suggest 1 additional one. Where the rubber washer fits in the tube it is just siliconed in place. I noticed this is not a tight fit if you bang it around a bit, so I cut a spacer out of a tin can to place between the front of the washer and the front cap so it keeps the rubber washer from shifting forwards. May be overkill but was an easy to do addition. Cut it about 1/8" longer than the space between the washer and the end of the tube that holds the whole array and it tightens down when you screw down the front cap.
I didn't find the listing for CYRO's ACRYLITE® IR acrylic 11460 - infrared transmitting  sample so I emailed them and asked about it. Will post what they reply.

I filled the while front of the housing with black rtv silicone. took all the slop out of the washer.

Just checked the Lee filter site and it said Transmission begins above 730 nanometres.so I guess the reviewer was incorrect on the 900nm. statement. I asked for a sample of the plastic from eplastic and they are sending me a sample.
Install the filter this weekend and you can not see any light without an NV device. I drilled an 1/8" hole thru the cap and glued it to the inside. Without the filter it looks like what you see in the 1st part of the video, With the filter all I see is the dot itself. And the package it came in says above 730nanometers.  It is 75x75mm square and thin as a thick sheet of paper so bends easily.

Filters showed up today.  They don't fit.  measure at 25mm and stretch to about 26.5mm.

Thinking about using see through flip up scope covers and adding the IR PASS filter.

THESE do not fit.

I show 1.18 & 1.22 on the front ring as it steps from the front to the middle. I ordered a cap for the front 1.18 and will see if that works when it gets in. Probably should have gotten one for the 1.22 size.
