The Ka-bar is a good blade for the money, but for around the same price, you could get a Becker BK7

The ka-bar is a great knife, don't hesitate to get one. It will hold up very well to camp/utility chores which is all 99.9% of us are going to use a knife for anyway.

Becker's are great.  Ka-bars are awesome too.  I still pack around a USMC version Ka-bar now and again.  Made from 1095 steel which keeps a decent edge and sharpens rather easy.  I would say for a good stomping knife you can't go wrong with a BK7, Ka-bar.

The CS carbon V stuff is nice too, can find SRK in the $40~$50 range.  Hope this helps.  Also try www.bladeforums.com for help but really you can't go wrong with either of the three mentioned.

I usually take the ka-bar & gerber multitool w/ BHI airborne sheath shown above with me. I haven't had a problem tackling any knife-oriented field task with that setup.

Hey Tooly, as good as the Ka-Bar is, I would really look hard at the Becker line...the BK7 is a great blade for the money and is a little more utilitarian than the Ka Bar.

You kind of need to clarify your knife uses.  Is this a primary knife for bug-out?  Is it going to be used for camping/backpacking or hunting/skinning, etc.?  I would avoid any of the saw-backs on knives.  A separate folding saw such as Gerber's or Sawvivor will run you around $20-30 and will be the best addition.  Heck, even the the small wood saw on a Leatherman or SAK is better than most saw's on fixed-bladed knives.

You can't go wrong with the Ka-Bar, but I think you could do better with the Becker....
