It would probably work but look weird as the dust cover on a govt model is longer.

It won't work as a drop-in conversion. A gunsmith could do the work to make everything fit and function properly, but it would be more cost-effective to just sell the 5" pistol and buy a commander-sized one.

The fullsize and commander frames are the same size... dustcover, gripframe, everything. The hammer might be different between the two (colt comes to mind). Commander size slide, barrel, and recoil spring is what you need to do the conversion

YngSAR1- is correct the frames are identical, you should be able to have a complete commander slide group and drop it in. for complete reliability you should fit the barrel and look at the feed ramp make sure the barrel doesn't overhang you frame.

Well, it's a drop in if you don't mind the overhang at the front of the frame. If you do mind it (I would), just go ahead and grind off that extra 3/4 inch off the front; but before I did, I'd make darn sure that the Commander size was really what I wanted.
If you do the conversion, put the full size barrel and slide assy up for sale on the equipment exchange board here. I'm sure you'll find someone who'll want them

I believe if you'll check, you'll find the dust cover is indeed smaller on the Commander frame. |
