Anyone receive a field grade Greek Garand from the CPM recently...or maybe even a rack grade gun?  I'm curious about the condition of the rifle...are they worth ordering or have we hit the bottom of the barrel by now

thanks in advance

I just ordered a couple Greek field grades. I just got the email telling me that CMP "received my order". I dunno how long it will take but when they get here I'll let you know their condition.

I got 3 that I flew up to Anniston in October and hand picked at the CMP store. If I was buying more through the mail I'd buy a woodless dane and put on a new stock.....

I don't think it's really a bottom of the barrel type of situation. As I understand it, as the rifles come out of the crates they inspect them and grade them. There's just as good a chance that the LASt rifles they take out of the crate will be nice ones (within grade) as the first ones. In other words, it's not like they sorted through hundreds and thousands of rifles and are selling them from best to worst. It's purely luck of the draw.

FWIW, I've got an order in for a service grade. I found out I'm # 198 or so on the list. It could be late next year before I see this rifle.

I received my Greek-return Field Grade in October....it's in good shape, rifling looks pretty decent, good muzzle, only thing is that the oprod park is fairly worn and the buttplate crosshatch pattern is worn down pretty well too...and the dinged-up stock that seems to be relatively common on the Greek return rifles.

Don't have any pics handy at the moment but I'll post some if I can.

The woodless generally have better barrels. I hand picked a woodless with a VAR barrel that had a ME less than 1.5. At $295 you can still spend another $130 on wood and metal and break even on the cost of a field grade......and have a new stock.

Just my .02

I had bought 3 HRA's about a year and a half ago when they were $299.  On two, the wood was decent, the third was beech so I sold it.  Overall, I was very happy with all of them.

heres a rack grade S/A on the top and field grade HRA on the bottom, the hra came with the oversized beech stock that i swapped out for an original hra one, it should refinish nicely.

Is this for a Greek Service Grade? Or the other Service Grade they were offering? How did you find out your number on the list? I sent my order in right before they stopped accepting orders and would like to know my number if possible.

FWIW when I saw the update on the page saying they were no longer accepting orders I called them to make sure my order was accpeted. They made no mention of a list or number but said that the 90-120 day backorder that was on the site when I ordered was still valid. I was hoping that meant I would have mine in hand by April.

I ordered a Service Grade (not a Greek return). Sent everything in around about the 15th of November, called around the 22nd.

Anyone know where to find the non-oversized (ie WW2 contour) walnut M1 stocks for less than $100? I'm looking to replace my oversized (and to me, uncomfortable) birch stock...

ETA: Apologies! Not trying to hijack!  (the Greek FG's may be a matter of luck, but I'd say go ahead, they don't seem to be all that bad, and sometimes you get a particularly good one anyhow--I think I did! Go for it, IMHO)

So the Garand stocks come in two differant sizes? Wow, I was never aware of that fact. the stock on my rifle always seemed overly think thus making it a bit hard to handle.. now I'm curious what I've been missing in good handling characteristics
assuming i have the thicker stock.

I received a Greek field grade back in October. I was happy as hell. All USGI parts and USGI stock, cartouch still visible w/ circle "P". Metal parts all showed surface/handling  wear, gas cylinder had zero finish remaining. 5.8 mil. receiver / 5-55 dated bbl, crown is a bit rough but the rifle will shoot 3" groups @ 100 yds. The stock was rough, some dude had etched his name on the forearm, but it cleaned up pretty nice.

My order is for the non-Greek. According to the e-store, it posted on 11/22. I got my place in line when I had customer service on the phone about something else. She looked up my order and did a quick calculation (I could hear her flipping pages and counting). She told me that even though my place in line was (approximately) 198 there could be folks in line before me with multiple gun orders (surely the case) and that would move me down. I got the timing from reading between the lines over at the CMP forum. It's a guess, nothing more.

Personally, I'm not too worried about it. I look at like I've got an option on a future service grade if and when they become available. My guess is that CMP has their hands full right now with the carbines coming in. That either means it's going to be a long time before they get around to these Garands or they're going to try to knock them out at the first of the year. Hard to know. I guess we'll just wait and see.
