From what I understand there is a simple locking pin that holds the fake can in place. It should be at the bottom of the fake can. You should see a small weld spot. Drill that weld spot out, pull the locking pin out and the can should pop off.
NOTE: this is for your info purposes ONLY. I can only assume that you will do this only AFTER you have the SBR paperwork back.

You are correct. I am in the same boat and started looking to where that weld is and it is actually covered up very well. It is on the bottom of my can. Figured I would dremel the can at that point and look for the weld. Once I find it I will chuck it up in my drill press and remove metal until I see the pin. Hopefully it is easy as find weld, drill out weld and pull out pin with pliers. However, nothing ever goes perfectly.

first off, THANKS!!!
secondly, i'm not particularly fond of black helos on my roof so ONLY after i get my sbr papers!
so, now, this is just pinned on? will i still be able to use it after i take it off without having to pin it back on? does it have the springloaded 3-lug feature? you know, i was thinking maybe the front of the can had to be unscrewed and something removed from the inside but i guess i was thinking too complicated...oh well...
i think it looks "tom clancy-ish" cool with the fake can and it'd be fun to put on for playing around...you know, air-soft style! hahahahaha "he said that which cannot be named!"

My experience with the MP5 cans, is you will probably destroy them, trying to remove them. They fit very tight around the smooth portion of the barrel. The screwed on cans for the 223/308 guns are a little more foregiving. If you are careful, you should be able to save it.
And by the way, there are not that easy to remove. Don't let anyone tell you that just come off easy. They where ment to be installed so they wouldn't just come off. The pins just don't 'fall' out either.
After you remove the can, the worse part is, will also find there is a small hole drilled in your barrel where the pin engages.

Once I remove my can, I will probably strip the barrel from the lugs to the muzzle (since the powder coat is too thick and standard accessories designed for the three lug barrel don't fit until you remove the powder coat and refinish it with some high temp paint or something similar that is thin), weld up the hole, file it down smooth, then paint it with some special paint that matches the bobcat finish (got it from www.ronnysweapons.com). Then install the MP5 flash hider. Can't wait...

I have a similar question.
I also am considering a SBR MP5K PDW clone using a BW89, but instead of messing with the removal of the fake can on the BW89 PDW, though of just getting the BW89 pistol and adding the stock and K grip after ATF approval.
Does anyone know if the aftermarket PDW stock and k grip from sources like POF and Top Notch fit on the BW89?
I thought I had read the k grips don't fit well on the BW89 pistol?
Also, will the plastic FBI type trigger housings fit on BW89 models, or do they use a MP5K specific housing?
Thanks,

First, DO NOT try to drill out the pin! Its made of a steel sooooo hard that after I got it out I tried to file it and the file did nothing to it. Not even a mark on it. Yes you will about destoy the FS, but thats the only way. You have to cut a large enough chunk out around the pin to grip it with pliers. I even used a dremel cutoff blade to grind flats on the pin to grip it. My needlenose would not grip it, just spinning on the pin. Then after removing the pin you have to tap the FS off with a hammer. Wrap the whole end of the gun barrel and sight portion with masking tape or a rag so not to peen the paint finish. You have to tap it on each side taking turns side to side and it will drop off. Its pressed onto the barrel, thats it! And Gun-kote worked well on the unfinished end you will find after removing the FS. Use a heat gun to bake it on after spraying and following the directions.

I had my FS taken off when I got my C3 paperwork...
I can say that there is NO WAY to get the thing off without damaging it.
I wouldn't worry about it since the whole point of the C3 paperwork is getting the thing off...

I was able to get mine off relatively undamaged. Just take your time. After I got it off I filled in the hole in the fake can with Bondo, masked it off with tape and repainted it. You can hardly tell.

Vinnie935 - why did you fix it? Can you reinstall it on the lugged barrel?

Before I finished the end of the barrell I could take it on and off, and it fit really tight. I never fired it with the fake can on, but you can slide it back onto the barrell. But,I haven't done it since I used Gun Kote to finish the end of the barrell. I'm worried that the finish will wear off.

Is it me or does the shelf look a little low in front causing the trigger pak to slant down on the right hand side as you look at it. Does it run ok?

No it's not you, it does slant a little. It hasn't seemed to affect function. I haven't had a jam yet in close to 500 rounds.

i was told the mp5 trigger housings will usually fit on the mp5k but you have to cut off the back shelf(?) of the housing. you know, i don't think i've ever seen a k mdl trigger housing for sale!
andy at bw says the pof and top notch stuff is good-to-go but the front grip might need some fitting.

I went with the BW-89 pistol in order to avoid the drilling/refinishing aspect. The downside to this is you have to buy the folding stock and k-grip. I found both on sturm a while back for a decent price. BTW the FedEX website says my receiver will be back from the engraver on thursday.

Steve Sawyer, who has an ad on the NFA For Sale Board
link to sbr engraving
He did it exactly as I requested, emailed me a picture of the work and had a quick turn around time.

Thanks for the reply hardcorps1775.
Just saw a photo of what I think is a BW89 with a plastic housing on the pic thread, posted by gill. (page 8 at the bottom)
Thanks,

I worked all night trying to remove my fake can from my SW5 PDF after I got the form 1 back and the receiver engraved. I ended up using my small milling machine and removing almost all the material of the aluminum fake can.....what a job. It was all worth it in the end though. My barrel finish was funked up. I touched it up and added a FH....that went on tight with a rubber mallet. I don't intend to be popping it on and off anyway, so it's all good.

Since we're all talking about SBR'ing an SP89 type gun, does anybody have a pic of the engraving they had done? Where did you have yours engraved at? I was thinking about having mine done on the front of the magwell if possible.

I thought about putting a line through this, but that would've really lost the point of the picture. Hell, It's just me name and city anyway.

Thanks HKdude!
What do you think about the front of the magwell?
I guess I'll send mine in to the guy on the EE that has been advertising a lot and see what he can do.

No problem.
I think in front of the magwell would be fine as long as there is room...they have to be at least 3/32" tall if I remember correct...I went 1/8" just to be safe. If it all fits, it would be a great spot. I was going to have the guy in MN engrave mine too, but I ended up finding a spot local that did it...just less hassle.
