Does this thing still exists? No one seems to have them in stock.

If not, what is a better option?

Production stopped a while back. I remember asking out them on here before and someone said it was due to some big USMC contract Eagle was working on at the time. Along with someone saying they are basically out of business now.

Ebay is your best option.

Eagle isn't out of business. The parent company of Eagle (ATK) decided to shut down the 'flagship' factory in Missouri. The production is now spread between the two factories they have in Puerto Rico (technically a US facility  < --- to stay in compliance with the Berry Amendment) and the one in Dominican Republic.

Freakin' shame the Fenton, MO plant is closed. They made great gear there.

Their gear made at their Missouri plant was fantastic. The stuff made down in the Caribbean, is not even close..

Agreed. Don't worry, First Spear has taken up the slack.

I started a thread about my recently purchased A-III a few years back. The context of that thread was about my disappointment that upon receiving my Eagle A-III I discovered that it was made in the Dominican Republic.

It was not a long thread but most of the responses were that it was Eagle so don't worry about it, and I agreed.

A couple weeks ago I purchased a Source water bladder and installed it in my A-III.

There is an opening at the top of the pack for the tube that has a Velcro cover/protector. When I pulled the piece off it ripped the stitching of the Velcro that was attached to the pack.

I'm sure this pack will stand up to anything I put it through but at the same time I am disappoint Eagle.

Two of my US made Eagle packs have done the same thing, the Velcro patches are not very strong, I have had them pull off of hats and shirts.

the AIIIs have been in existence since the early 90s, the layout design stemmed from the Gregory 1.5Day pack the came about in the late 80s.

I have only seen a few pics of this pack, but all told if you took the time to study the "genesis" of pack design from mid 60s when nylon duck /packcloth became available

you can track the "lineage" of design, and potentially see where they *could* go.

The only pack from First Spear that I would consider is the COMM PACK

By inspection, the HOTEL 23 is a design extension of the LARGE BECKER pack

The $50 (Dominican Republic) Eagle A-III that I got from Natchez awhile back has been holding up pretty good.

I've had no problems with the velcro on my bag. But, the stitching is not the most beautiful thing to look at.

It was like the bag was either made late in the day on a Friday, or the person was getting tired of sewing in a straight line...

I'm just glad that I didn't pay full retail for it..
