What setups are you deer hunters using and what bullet load?

I use Federal Blue Box 150 grain SP's. They seem to be more accurate than the Remington Green Box 150 gr. Power Points.

This is a Poly coverted by Warbird. It has since returned to a more traditional look:

I actually hunt Elk and I use 150grain Core-Lokt Green & Yellow box. Seems to bring the animals down in one shot. I use a 3x9 Burris scope on a Springfield mount. Most of my shots are from 200-400 yards.

Contemplating taking out my new AR-10 this year.

Two years ago, my old Troy MCS set up.
Never use anything but WINCHESTER 168gr BALLISTIC SILVERTIP

Last year with my new Mod1.
Same bullet, thats all I use

Hey Log or Silentreaper.....how loud is that muzzlebraken on your scout.......by that I mean that I am planning on using a Socom 16 for deer & hogs and am wondering if I am going to need hearing protection for a shot or two while hunting ?

It's a Smith Vortex flash hider.
I dont think its too loud for one or two shots.
I never remeber hearing the shot when hunting,
I guess im so focused.

I have used a .308 PSS for deer since the mid 90's and like you I never remember hearing my shot while hunting,however I just recently acquired a SOCOM 16, haven't had a chance to shoot it yet but everyone tells me it is so loud. I figured that I might not notice one or two shots while I am hunting with it . Thanks for the info, also I have mounted a Micro T1 on it, as I plan on it being my 50-200 yard gun, now I just need to get it out and shoot it!

My safety is really loud. CLICK!!! Is there anything that can be done to make it quite. I can see it now. Nice buck at 50 yards and CLICK!

If you really want to come out, go to the Montana Fish wildlife and parks website for all the hunting license and regulation info first. It is pretty expensive for non-resident tags. As much as I dislike outfitters you might want to consider an outfitter sponsored hunt. They lease a large amount of land that is prime hunting and basically lock residents out.

Does Mule Deer taste any different than Whitetail?

I have found thru the years that they do each have a distinctive taste. However I think it may have more to do with the diet of the particular deer and where it is harvested.
I have taken deer in the pine forest that has a very gamey taste and I have taken deer in the wheat stubble fields that taste better than beef. I have also taken deer in the foothills that eat the low growing soft green forbes that taste almost as good as alfalfa fed beef.

I think a lot also depends on the care and handling of the meat as well. I like to get mine into my butcher as quickly as possible for cutting and packaging. In several cases rigor had not even set in and that has been some of the best meat I have ever had. Alot also depends on how you cook it

I have not yet taken a deer with my M1A, but it is not the rifle's fault.

I use a 150 grain Federal Classic SP. Glass is a Leupold 1.5-5X 30mm tube with the illuminated German #4 reticle.

I hunted with my M1A in the wooden stock with a 1 screw scope mount and a 4X12 scope. The deer didn't know there were 19 more rounds in the rifle when the first one dropped them.

I used civilian cases, 165 grain boat tails, IMR 3031 powder and Federal BR primers.

when I move to a state that I dont have to wait 20 years to get points to "win" a tag I will. Up until then I have shot a few yotes with mine.

November 8th, 2008, around 8am opening morning,

185 yards +/-

rifle- springfield "loaded" model with Leupold VXIII 4.5-14X40 scope

ammo- 165 Gr Sierra Game Kings, 42.0Gr Varget, commercial brass, 2.810" COAL WLR primers. 1 shot dropped him.

for at hunting load this year, ill be looking for a 175Gr bullet thats as similar to the 175Gr HPBT SMK as possible. any ideas ?

Ok! Well I have two socoms an a scout. One socom is now ready for deer season. I have a burros scout scope setup in leupold low rings. I'm looking at a sage ebr stock for my scout.

Anyone here have any feedback on the ebr?

I hunt with this one, but as yet, no deer :(
