Hey all

I had a couple of questions about my Springfield M1A. Forgive me for the newbie questions!

1. I have trouble removing mags. When i rock it forward and down, they usually "stick" I hope that makes sense. There are not USGI mags, but this happens on all of them.

2.I have a TRW bolt, and a SA oprod. How do i tell what my barrel, FH, or other parts are?

3. How do i identify if my rifle is standard, NM, ect? It has a NM front/rear sight

4. Inside the stock under the barrel is marked "12" in white lettering. The "12" is also right above the "springfield armory" on the rear of the reciever.

5. How do i know if i have a "rear lug" receiver?

Serial # is 082xxx

Thanks for your help. Pics are always a plus!!

alex

Edit: it appears my trigger group is also TRW and is marked with the same "12" The barrel is NM.

May I suggest that you go to the site below, This is Different's site and you can find anything you want to know about the M14/M1A in his History and Development.

Best Regards,
Jim

You shouldn't need to rock it if the release lever is depressed enough.  Could be your mags?

You know, now that I think about it, I don't know if that's completely true either.  I'll look at mine and get back to you.

Duh, I had a brain fart.  You do have to rock to take out.  Just like going in.

Anyways, if your mags are rubbing, you can see where.  What kind of stock are you using.  FWIW, I had really cheap mag once that didn't work for crap, and it also was on the sticky side.  It rubbed on the sides towards the rear.  That may be your problem, bad mags.  I don't know as much about M14 mags as I probably should, but either way, I know you need to use good ones.  Which typically means USGI.  I haven't had a problem with any of the 10 rounders I've gotten from springfield though.

The stock is just the standard one that came with the weapon. When i depress the mag release and rock it forward, it just catches on the front mag "retainer thingy" i dont know what its called, but it just sticks on that piece of metal that the front of the mag catches on

The "retainer thingy" is the op rod spring guide which anchors the front of the magazine. When the mag release lets go of the rear of the magazine, the mag must be rotated FULLY to the front. Then, the "retainer thingy" is completely withdrawn from the front hole in the mag and the mag can be pulled out. The mag is pulled out while rotated fully to the front. If you swing it a bit back, it will latch again.

How easy to they come out? do you have to give them a good tug?

They shouldn't fall out like a pistol. A snug fit is desired; however, it doesn't take a great deal of force to pull it out.  With the mag rotated fully forward, the first quarter inch of downward travel is with the mag rotated forward. Then, it doesn't matter. Just pull it straight down.
