Given the market, and CMP members buying/immediately flipping for hundreds more on gunbroker, you're not going to find a better deal than an expert grade right from CMP for 1150 out the door. Even the guys selling them on the CMP forum mark them up for resale, don't let anyone tell you CMP actually cares about the resellers since they're allowing it on their own forum. If any of the other parts are damaged or have rust, just shoot them an email and a few days later a new part arrives with a return label for the old part. I boxed up my old trigger group, slapped the label on it, then called FedEx to come pick it up like the return instructions suggested. For the money, I'm happy with what I got and know I couldn't get another rifle in this condition for this price without buying from CMP again. Once I decide to shoot for originality points and pick up a rack or field grade, and maybe a 1903, the wife and I will take a weekend trip to Alabama so I can get them in person because that's not something I want to mail-order. View Quote ![]() Don't forget to post a thread up with pics once you get it. If you browse through this thread you'll see my timeline of when I placed the order, got the DNB(do not bug us) email, had the charge hit my card, and when I got the shipping notice. Your timeline will be roughly the same, just make sure you follow the order process completely and give them everything they need so your order doesn't get held up. If you need to cover the CMP affiliate membership requirement, shoot 25 bucks to Garand Collector's Association...they share their membership DB with CMP, but I also just included a copy of the membership fee invoice with my CMP paperwork. If you have your C&R FFL, that pretty much covers everything else...except for that one page in the order form that requires a notarized signature. I just ran up the street to my bank for that one, was free for me since I bank there. |

My post-war SA expert came with a WRA bolt, IHC hammer, no markings on the safey, DRC windage knob, unknown elevation knob/pinion, and what appeared to be SA on everything else. I think they clarify in the expert description that there won't be any guarantees on part manufacturer outside of the receiver which is either sa/hra, ihc, or wra depending on how much you want to pay for an expert. As for period correct or even visually matching, same applies. I had an early trigger guard with that tool hole on the back of it, and most of the SA serials I found appeared to be early. They also sent an elevation knob/pinion that was gloss black while every other part was the post-war gray parkerization. Not a big enough deal to complain to them, since it's a working and good condition part, but the windage knob did have minor damage and rust. I ended up ordering a clean BMC windage/elevation combo from ebay that is post-war and gray park'd, but a week later and it hasn't shipped and the seller hasn't messaged me back so I guess I'll be looking for another soon. You do have the option of hitting up the online shops or ebay for certain manufacturer or period correct parts, they're still out there, but as another poster mentioned above...this is one of the causes of parts becoming more scarce. Admittedly I wanted to do the same thing the second this rifle showed up at my door, but the rifle works and looks great, so no point wasting the money and taking those parts off the market from someone else that might actually need them. My grandfather brought back an officer's sword, an officer's PPK, a Mauser w/sling, and a luger (he couldn't remember what german he took it from). I've also got a German helmet and leather pilots cap. I've also got all of his stuff as well (holster, helmet, clip bandoleer, bags/belts,etc) plus a correct RR 1911/Garand/1903/carbine. My 2 bits, do a local search 1st and try to find a good shape USGI issue one. The 3 things I look for are barrel crown (lower the better), play in the trigger group side to side (affects ammo feeding IMO) and import marks. The latter anymore I wouldn't worry about for a shooter Carbine. I would expect to pay $1000-1500 for "good" USGI carbine anymore. This is vital IMO even if you only plan on 1 Carbine Barrel Gauge I wouldn't buy one unless the barrel gauged under "1.5" Also, look at early Plainfield (1965-68 production) if your looking to save some money. Some used USGI surplus trigger groups and parts (my current one did) and can be good shooters. Also, "1st Generation" Universals are decent, they are USGI compatible. Avoid any with a serial above 100K, Universal started changing the design and by the "Gen 3" had earned a rep for being bad guns. This might be worth a look https://www.gunbroker.com/item/999476026 Pricey for a 1st time Carbine owner but FA's are the best Carbines on the market currently. The used 1 I mentioned I own I snagged $1500 last spring 2022 and jumped on it even though I owned 2 at the time. I'm watching that sale on GB just to see what this one goes for. I knew about early Universals, is there something off w/ later Plainfields or just not as many GI parts? The early ones have a better chance of having USGI parts IMO. I've owned 3 Plainfield's over the years. My 1st was a good shooter IIRR, don't remember what year it was. Only reason I got rid of it was I traded it in for something else since I had a couple USGI's and a Iver Johnson at the time and got a better deal on the trade with that over the IJ (which was a tad mag picky IIRR, I ended up selling that 2013 during that ammo crunch) 2nd I bought 2015 and it had issues, failure to cycle. It was used and the LGS had a decent used warranty so they gave me a different gun. The current one I own I bought 2020 to run cheap Russian steel cased ammo in and save my "good" carbines wear and tear. That died with the Covid panic, and Russian steel cased being banned. I plan on starting reloading soon so I'll use it as the test bitch for that when the time comes |

Now that a carbine collector helped me put together an IBM (by taking the parts off an Inland & spinning the bbl onto an IBM receiver I had), I think of carbines a lot like I think of ARs. As long as the receiver is compatible, if anything breaks, throw NOS GI parts at it. That's the failure of the late Universals, the Kahr Auto Ordnance & the modern Inland - you can't.

View Quote Yeap.......and the sad part with Kahr is what screwed them up was a measuring mistake when they copied the USGI (Rockola IIRR) carbine they used to panograph the drawings they used. The bolt is 1.3MM longer than USGI spec so to fix that they had to adapt the receiver to match instead of retooling the bolt. "New" Inland uses the same subcontractor for their Carbine parts so you have the same issues there. |

Last M1 rifles and carbine I got were from GB. There is decent deals for both if you know what you are looking at. Most buyers I suspect do not and pay based on stock condition and how good the auction ad looks. That is why so many experts go for more than hardly used all original post war rifles in excellent condition.

I picked up a couple more M1 Garands from the CMP a few weeks ago and they both arrived today. They were Field Grade since that's all they had left. Both are Springfield Armory... ones from Feb 1943 and the other from April 1943. Both are in decent condition cosmetically. I can't find any rust on them and the finish is mostly intact. One of them gauges a 4 on muzzle and a 3 on throat according to the tag. The other is a "2+" on the muzzle and a "3+" on the throat.
It took about 3 weeks from the time I mailed my order to the time I received the rifles and about one week after the payment was processed. |

I like the FG rifles myself because they exhibit some true wear and use. The first FG I bought was an H&R that today would be considered a correct grade. The last one I bought was an M1D with a 2+/3 muzzle/throat wear. |
