I finally broke down and got an RCBS Lube-A-Matic II, as it seems casting will become more of a necessity than in previous years.

I cast for 35 Remington, .357 Magnum (rifle and pistol), 45-70, and 30-30.  The loads are generally made up for hunting velocities, and gas checks are usually used except for the plinking loads I sometimes make.

I need help picking out a lube for the press.  I have a Lyman heater installed, so hard lubes are OK.  It needs to obviously do all of the standard lube duties, it also needs to endure the Florida heat.  I'm currently looking at:

- Carnuba Red

- Thompson Blue Angel

- Lyman Orange Magic

I would also be interested in hearing about lubes for colder weather (15 - 50 degrees F) as I'll be moving back to New England next year.

Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated.

I personally like the convenience of hard lubes...convenince meaning they work in any weather and won't melt. I live in Texas so heat is a real issue. I've made my own lube and used it with great success for velocities of up to 1500 fps or so with no leading, but it's gooey and messy when it's warm in the shop.

As far as which hard lubes, I really like Thompsons Blue Angel or Red Angel...pick a color, both worked well for me.

Have you tried it in sub-freezing weather?

I still use the old soft stuff. See below chart in 2nd post.                                                                              Photo Albums Link

I use Lyman Orange Magic but I don't do much shooting in cold weather.

One option to consider is using a small cooler with a hot water bottle inside to put your ammo in.

This is one of the ones I like especially for rifle bullets.

My buddy and gunsmith is much more into this than I and he uses LBT Blue.  I tried it but what I did not like about it is that it extrudes out the bottom of my lubrasizer.  I gather that waste and toss it in the pot when I want to flux.  The 2500+ does not extrude out the bottom of the luber adjustment area.  The only downside is the 2500 is not colored and it's harder to see where your lube fill out is whereas the blue and red stuff is obvious when you need to put it back and and give another crank on the handle.  (I try not to over pressure the lube in the machine needlessly).

Carnauba Red sounds like it would fit your needs.

If you want something a little harder, Lars offers a commercial Carnauba Red that a bit stiffer than the regular stuff.

I was looking at the Carnuba Red and it seems like good stuff.  Based on another post I read about LBT Blue Soft as well.  It seems like it might handle the temp variation well.

Time to start calling the lube makers...

Check out White Label Lubes. I have had excellent results with their products.

want some real advice brother? stay away from the north east corner, that is where the big boats are gonna land soon, the ones with the red flags flying, and obama is gonna welcome them in

Edit: sorry, the state of the country has me really hating the north right now, I would go with the hardest lubes I could get and use a heater to apply it, the combustion temp of your powder burning will take care of your cold weather concerns, and good luck to you

I understand your sentiment completely, but don't underestimate the cranky Yankees in VT and NH.  They are not the same people as you'll find in NY, MA, and CT.  ME is tough to call.

I find pistol bullets in the back stop  with blue or red lube still in the lube grooves. My 50/50 alox/bees wax is gone. I have to wonder if the harder lubes are doing there jobs?  I like to see the lube star on the muzzle, then i know its working.

Have yet to have a leading issue using the harder lubes running them in 9mm handguns and AR's, 38 supers and .45
