I just bought a new Butler Creek 25rd mag for my 10/22. Well,  at the range yesterday it performed BAD! When It was loaded to 25 rounds it misfed on the first 3-4 rounds. Once the mag was unloaded to 20 rnds or so it did a little better.

I tried to see what was wrong. Well my guess is the lack of spring tension. Once partially loaded the follower seemed to be sticking in the mag. Like I said it was brand new, not dirty.


Should I clean and oil the inside. Or clean and maybe put in some dry graphite type lube? I dunno.

I have a 10rnd from Butler Creek and it works perfectly. Never even been cleaned after 100's of rounds. hug.gif

Copper coated or lead?

I have found that the copper coated work better than the lead bullets. The lead bullets have a heavier wax coating which may cause them to stick in the plastic feed lips

They were copper coated Remingtons. The cheap 550 rnd box from Walfart.

I have never used the Remingtons, I always use CCI or Federal.

I would wipe down the feed lips with some oil and try that, there could be a wax build up there.

I will try. But this started with the first 25 rounds ever placed in the mag. They were not oily or waxy or anything that would gum up the works.

I think one of two things is the matter:

1. The red follower is to big or mishaped and hanging up in the mag, or

2. The spring is too weak to draw the rounds up into the chamber

Or, some combination of the above. Regardless, the rounds are not being fed upwards very well at all. Maybe 150 rounds have gone thru the mag now.

The problem with BC mags I have is that they don't push  forward when you insert them.  Try pushing the mag forward a bit so it locks up tight towards the chamber.  It shouldn't wiggle much.

Initially I had the same problem with my new 25rd mag.  After letting it sit loaded for an hour or so it worked fine.
