I've settled on a Bushmaster as my first AR.  Any recommendations from there?  I will mainly use it for target practice but would like to get into some competition shooting.  Should I go with a flat top or a fixed handle with an accesory rail?  16" or 20" barrel? What are they going for so I don't get screwed when I go to purchase one?

If used for competition only go w/ the flattop. If for survival/self defense go w/ fixed handle, iron sights.

Depends on what kind of competition you want to shoot in.  If its CMP Service Rifle you can't use flat tops or 16" barrels.

If you are mainly going to be target shooting, I would suggest getting a 20" A2.  You will save some money by using fixed sights and it will help you learn how to master the weapon better by using iron sights.  Once you master that, you can get an ARMS mount and mount any optics you want.

If you are going to shoot NRA Highpower, don't just get an A2 with a 20" barrel, get one with a free float tube.  You basically want the "DCM" legal model.  These are available through CMP clubs for about $850 each.
