For the simple answer of multiple caliber choices, AR is the way to go.

All answers so far are correct. I have both, but if I could only have one it would be the AR platform hands down. SBR one lower and run multiple caliber uppers.

Decided my 4th would be an AK.

The question posed was what is more versatile. An AK is in no way as versatile as an AR.
