I just received my second CMP Service Grade M1.  The stock looks like it was never carried, just dragged and banged into every available object.  So I'm in the market for a new stock. So far I've found that the CMP, Dupage, and Boyds all carry repros.  So the question is, which is the better option?  The CMP looks pretty decent, and I can get it with all new metal.

Your thoughts?

I would go with a CMP stock any day of the week over the other options.

CMP gets their stocks from Dupage. Get one from him if you want one without the CMP logo. He can also pick outsomething with the sort of grain you are looking for

Jim Dupage is also a damn good guy to do business with.

I had good luck with a CMP stock, but I did sand the hell out of it and bring the wood down to a reasonable size.  Nice tight lock up and pretty grain.

Why don't you go to Ebay and look for Garand stocks.  There are some very nice original ones there for sale right now.

Ruxpin, what did you use to finish that stock?  Great job!

Thanks.  I used Tung oil.  Boned the stock first, then used several light coats of Tung Oil with a rub down in between coats when dry.  Just about all my Garands have a Tung Oil finish.

I like the CMP cartouche on the stock though it wasn't fully stamped on my stock as you can see.

As for the stock,,, like all Boyds/Dupage stocks the grain is a little wide for my tastes in a military grade stock but good old growth tight grain walnut is getting pricey and hard to find and I too had to sand the hell out of it to get it to military dimensions,.
The stock is pretty but would never be accepted for actual military use, the graining is far too open and under heavy use this stock will almost surely crack.

yep, I have one myself. Also, I have been told that Dupage stocks are made by Boyds to Dupage's specifications. I had a Boyd's laminate for a while-Ungodly oversized. The Dupage is MUCH better, and very nice wood.Good price too(and the box they ship in still has the CMP logo on the inside of the cover so it's obviously the same stock).

When I got my Garand, I bought a Boyds stock for it.  That stock was FAT and heavier than normal.  It was so fat that it bothered me.  I wound up replacing it with a Wenig stock.  That stock required a bit of fitting, but it was dimensionally the same and the original GI stock.  I've been very happy with it.

I only have experience with one straight from Boyd's. I love mine. Yes, it's thicker than a standard stock, but I kind of like it that way. I like heavy/beefy stocks. The only issue I had with mine was the back of the rear handguard needed to be trimmed back a bit, in order to fit. The rest of the stock was completely "drop in" and plenty tight. The rifle shoots great and it looks much better than the stock that came on it, which I'm pretty sure was the worst stock ever put on a Garand and didn't fit all that well, either.
