Okay, a little advice please. I am looking into adding to my rifle collection, already have a couple of AR15s
etc. I was looking at purchasing something in 308 cal. a Springfield M1A, SOCOM or AR10. I don't want to start a flame war over this, just some observations on which is the better to have around, for well you know.
Thanks in advance!

I would probably lean toward the Springfield Scout, as it takes a few more standard M1 parts, or an FAL. Of course, I would love to own/shoot any and all of them.

Hehe, I happen to own all of them, but that's something to be ashamed of as evidence of my lacking self control. I love the M1A's, they are the best feeling, most accurate battle rifles I've ever shot. They just feel incredible to shoot. But IMO they're a bit finicky on ammo, more prone to dirt and a bit more of a handful to keep running.

As I hate to admit it but if I could only have 1 .308 battle rifle I would choose the FAL over anything else avaialble. Other weapons might be more accurate, some might look beteer, some takes more accessories, some are much lighter; but none offer the same rugged dependency and adequate accuracy that the FAL offer. An M1A is like an AR to me, though I havce never have one really go bad on me the fear is always there and I am more worry about them; the FAL on the other hand is more like an AK, I know for sure it will work, always. It also happen to cost ALOT less than any M1A of any vintage and build. For a first time buyer that alone should be sufficient. M1A are like 1911's, expensive to get into, to modify and to keep running.

Of the three you list, I'd personally go with the AR10 because of all the mods available.....however, as DocGP suggested, to me it would be the FAL all day long. Just my .02

Another vote to concider the JLD PTR-91. They are every bit as good as a FAL. I own both and both are great MBR's.

AR10.....but only after they reveal the 'improvements' for SHOT. Reports on current crop AR-10s are good, much better than form 2-3 years back. Not yet perfected.

Lot's of good advice guys, I don't really know enough about FAL's to make an kind of educated guess. I like the Armalite AR10 and have shot a friend's MIA and it was nice but thought I'd look at some other types.

I love my JLD, but if I had to chose between it and a FAL......

It'd be FAL all the way.

For a .308 gun I'm interested in RRA's new ar10s. Uses nice cheap FAL mags. :)
We'll see more at shot in a week or so.

honestly with all of the rifinements over the past two years or so, the AR10 is a much better weapon than any of the other 308 battle rifles that are availible today,

in their time they were great rfilfes, and ever a year ago, they were better than the ar10, but now with all the lessons learned from the SASS trials, they were able to create a better system

i hope the RRA works out better than the Bushmaster, at least their prices are much better than the Bushmaster, I hope they have better luck than any other companies that tried and failed using FAL Mags
