I have a No4MK1 and I've gathered that during the '60s there were some conversion kits available. IIRC, the kit had a new barrel, magazine and bolt head. Maybe a new ejector screw as well.
I doubt it would be easy to find one of these kits anymore. And probably not worth the hassle to "do-it-yourself." Plus, there may be issues with the chamber pressure between .303 Brit. and 7.62 NATO/.308 Win. But I think an Enfield No.4 in .308 would be the finest bolt action battle rifle ever. I would love to have one myself. |

Why not just buy an Indian 2A or 2A1 - an Enfield in .308?
I would be wary of a kit to take a regular Enfield and convert it to .308. The chamber pressure is substantially greater in .308 and the Indians had to use a better grade of steel to handle it in the 2As and 2A1s than was used in the British rifles. It MIGHT work, but then it might not. |

I have read that it's fairly easy to rechamber to 7.62x54R...which isn't .308/7.62x51 but 7.62x54R is much cheaper to buy than .303. No bolt face work is need if I recall correctly, & the bore diameter is correct (both .303 & 7.62x54R use .311 bullets)

At one time the Brits frequently converted No4's to 7.62MM NATO. The steel used in the No4 Mk1 and variants is more than strong enough to handle the pressures. The biggest issue is magazines, from a civillian standpoint..
The Ishapores are a decent rifle, but lack the sight radius of the No4's. I've fitted mine with a Parker Hale rear sight, which greatly improved it's accuracy potential.. I have yet to see similar for the Ishapores.. Meplat- |

Dont plz. I love .303 lol. But if your going to its actually quite simple once you find someone who will do it for you. its gonna cost as much as the amount of ammo that it would take to shoot out your gun though. I dont know about 7.62x54R though, Ive never heard of anyone doing that.
I didnt think ammo was that expensive, I get 20rnd boxes for $4-$8 each from various places. Try www.dansammo.com/. They have FNM, 100 rnds for $40. |

A friend of mine in Canadian Forces converted one of his from .303 to 7.62mm NATO (so he could shoot issue ammo) and said it's the dumbest thing he ever did. Shot poorly and didn't feed right, He recommends buying one of the Indian rifles which were built that way.
