I have a rifle that has a crappy matte blue finish. I plan of getting it refinished but do not look forward to boxing it up and shipping it anywhere as it weighs 36 pounds. Today I was at a friends shop who told me that he could powder coat it for about $40-50. Have any of you tried this before? If so what were the results. TIA

Rifle will have to be stripped down to it's smallest componants and all spring steel removed. They will have to take the metal to around 450-500 degrees and all springs will die at thsi heat.

Other than that pick a pretty color you like and go with it. Unlike other bake on coatings like MolyKote or Bake on Teflon Powder Coat is thick enough that if you chip or wear through it you will not be able to touch it up but must take to bare metal again and start over.

Its pretty durable. I did 3 guns, an Fal South African folder, an AR, and a 1911. The reason for each of these peices was that they are a mixture of steel and aluminum components. There are some scratchs now, but these are firearms that are used a lot.
