I just got a Rem 870 and am thinking about trying some of the mini slugs through it. Just wondering what experiences others have had with these. Are they just a jam waiting to happen?

They work great in a Win 1300.  IIRC,they are somewhat problematic in the 870. I think there is a mod you can do to the Rem to make it work better with them, but then it won't work with standard shells.

Try them, just 6 bucks and you will know.

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like something to stay away from.

I suppose I could try some since every gun handles different ammo differently. Just heard they were fun to play around with.

Slickbt- They should since the FN is a well dressed Win. 1300 Defender.

The elevator needs adjusting in the 870 to make it 100% reliable with mini-shells - my wife's "pet" 870 has been adjusted thus.  The downside is that it then becomes not fully reliable with full-size shells.

They run pretty well in my Benelli Nova Tactical, but not 100% - which means not for defense AFAIC.

I've never heard of any function problems for the mini-shells in Winchester Defenders (right out of the box - no mods) and, of course, there were a couple of shotguns made (but not widely distributed) specifically for the mini-shells - a weird looking pistol-gripped "assault-shotgun-thing" (can't remember the model name) and a more traditional-looking "tactical" shotgun called a "Poseiden" or some such IIRC.

Appreciate all the replies and info.
I don't think I really want to play around trying to adjust for something I won't use much.
Thanks

The Mini-Slugs, the 71/2's and the duplex loads run like a champ in my 1300 Defender.

I'm suprised no one has made a shotgun that shoots just the mini slugs yet. I thought ruger would be all over it by now.

+1 (actually 12 in the tube, and one more in the chamber) for the 1300 Defender. I've got one, and a few of the mini slug shells. Feeds just fine, and I can stuff a bunch in the shotgun! Gotta love that.

Did you not see/read my post above?  Just 3 above yours?

There just wasn't enough demand for these - I doubt a major manufacturer will ever market one.

What does the slug itself look like?  Normal Foster-style?  Even at the modest velocity, a good design should expand reliably.

Thanks for the info
