I used to run the PRI gas buster on all my rifles, but after a recent Magpul Carbine 2 class i've been converted.

I ran a 14.5" LMT with Blackout/M4-2000, and my friend ran a 14.5" Noveske N4 with Blackout/M4-2000.  Pretty much the exact same gas/barrel/ammo set up.  Only difference was i ran a AR Gas Vent with BCM Gunfighter (with RTV Silicone applied to the top part of the charging handle), and he ran a standard PRI M84 gas buster.

The results speak for themselves.  Another student in the class also ran a M4-2000 with PRI Gasbuster on a midlength gas system upper, and he also got a very dark mark on his face from all the gas blow back.  Of course, my face wasn't completely clean (some blowback still escaped from under the charging handle), but the difference was pretty astonishing.

I RTVed my Gas Buster and it seems to have reduced gas slightly further. I really want to try one of those gas vents.

I had done the same to my gas busters, but I still got gas face when using them.  I'm thinking that the cuts they made into the handles to vent gas simply wasn't enough... by the time the blow back gets that far, it can either go under the charging handle or out the tiny vents in the PRI gas buster.

I'm thinking why the gas vent is so effective is that it gives blow back a large escape channel before it gets anywhere near your face.  Furthermore, i prefer the BCM charging handle's operation: i've broken quite a few PRI charging handle latch's roll pins.

So where do ya get one of those gas vents? Are they a Pain to A$$ to put in?

Good to know.  I just took deliver of my M4-2000 and have less than 75 rounds through it.  I did the "gasket" fix after my first outing with it and it made a big difference.  ....but clearly not enough for a day long carbine course

i think what they're talking about is the Forward Assist.  I remember seeing one that was "vented."  i would assume it would be as easy as using a punch to tap out the forward assist and replace it w/ the gas vented one.  i hate putting in the Forward Assist. it's b*tch b/c i have to hold it w/ my thumb will trying to get the punch in, and it has to be straight too. i think i just need a better punch set.

So, what happens if you just remove the Forward Assist?

Then it looks crappy. Also the gas will still puff straight back. The vent is changing the direction of the gas.

badass,
I am assuming that in a Magpul Dynamics Carbine 2 class you did ALOT of support side shooting.
How was it shooting support side?
Did you get massive amounts of gas in your face??

Thanks

I picked up my AR gas vent from Weapon Outfitters, just google "AR Gas Vent" and they are the first retailer to pop up.

Install was pretty easy, I knocked out the original FA roll pin, put in the gas vent, making sure to line up the vent correctly, and put the roll pin back in place.  I used a drill bit as a improvised punch, lol

This was one thing that everyone was quite interested in was how this vent performs with left handed users.  At Magpul Carbine 2, we did indeed do a large amount of "reaction side" shooting where i shot my rifle as if I were left handed.  I did not notice the gas vent at all during shooting, and it was only in retrospect i realized I hadn't gotten blasted in the face with gas.

I'm thinking that the vent shoots gas to forwards as well as to the right.  I'll be sure to try it again and try and figure out exactly what's going on, but yeah, i didn't get blasted in the face with gas, lol

Reviewing the results, i think the main thing one wants to do is to reduce gas blow back pressure in the upper receiver before it gets to the charging handle.  The PRI's biggest flaw is that the escape channel is cut into the charging handle itself.  By the time the the blowback gets to the escape channel in the charging handle, the gas is just as inclined to escape under the charging handle and deliver carbon and gas onto your face.

The AR gas vent gives a larger channel for gas to escape farther up the upper receiver, and that's why less gas shot under my charging handle and i avoided gas face
