Ran across a local guy who has a pair of these for sale for $800.00. He says they were originally military issue. I know very little about NV but this does not seem too good. Is there any way that this could be legitimate? Have these been released to surplus and is there any way to tell if they have? This is one of those things that kinda say stay away.

7Bs have been sold comercially for a long time by MANY Night vision suppliers. Now when he says that these were Military issue He is correct in that the AN PVS 7B is a an Issue item. Now if he meant that partocular pair was you might want to get that clarified.

If this pair is stamped "US Government Property" on the very top of the system itself, then it was certainly military issued. None of these systems were DRMO'ed, surplused or released for civilian ownership and therefore stolen military gear. If it seems to be stolen, stay away. The Dept of Defense has a way of tracking all of these systems and confiscating them. If this guy is selling a 7B for $800 that sounds suspicious from the start.

That's not entirely true... A batch of GW1 51lpmm goggles were surped out by the USAF.

For $800 they've got to be stolen.

Sure they were. Try calling up ITT/Litton with the serial number and ask them for a tube spec sheet. Oh, and lets see if you have the balls to give them your name and address.. I guarantee you'll have a knock on your door within a week.

Those were AN/PVS-5s

$800 -> HOT as the surface of the sun... Run like hell on that one, there's a CID agent somewhere looking for 'em...

P.S. FYI the Army consideres NODs to be near-equal to weapons in terms of security & accountability... It is a 'sensitive item' that is treated far more seriously than a stolen box of MREs, or what-have-you... To give you an idea, if a set of NODs is discovered missing and stays missing long enough, that can lock down an entire post.... Needless to say, if the Army 'lost' those, they WILL be trying to get them back...

PVS5's were never available in 51lpmm....

C'mon guys,... the easiest way to know if these are Five Finger Specials is to ask if there are any serial numbers removed. This would be obvious as there would be sanding marks on the top or face of the goggles where the serial number was etched in with an electric pencil. Everybody knows this.

It could be a case of a guy who bought a commercial set of ITT 5001's and is passing them off as .mil spec because they essentiall are.
