Hmmm sounds like a good reason to start reloading 9mm. +P is too damn expensive to plink with.

Just reload with a slower burning powder than you do for the 4" pistol. You won't loose anything that way. Some fine tuning on seating depth and it will surprise you what it really will do.

If that is the case then the 16" bbls would be way slower and maybe even stop in the bbl?? How can that be? I've seen results from people shooting from 16" bbls that get 100-250 fps more out of their 16" bbl? What's the story? I'm ordering an Oly 9mm in a few weeks, I want to know what would be best to get.

OK, since I chronographed my (Rebarrelled) Camp Carbine Recently against my Taurus with the same loads last month, here are some figures...

Conditions: Taken at ~50 Degrees Fahrenheit; All are Hornady bullets seated in Commercial Federal Brass cases unless otherwise noted.

90 Grain JHP on top of 9.0 Grains AA#7. 1233 FPS out of the Taurus, 1546 FPS out of the Carbine.

115 Grain JHP on top of 5.5 Grains Herco (My Pet accuracy load for the Taurus)1151FPS out of the Taurus. 1319 FPS out of the Carbine.

124 Grain JHP on top of 8.0 Grains of AA#7. 1161 FPS out of the Taurus, 1418 FPS of the Carbine.

147 Grain JHP on top of 7.0 Grains AA#7. 912 FPS out of the Taurus, 978 FPS out of the Carbine.

158 Grain Cast TCFP Sized 0.356" on top of 3.3 Grains AA#2. WCC Cases. 853 FPS out of the Taurus, 827FPS out of the Carbine.

There are gains to be made with the longer barrel. But powder selection is the kicker...I've had good success with Clays and Universal, as well. The Herco load is my control load (and the BEST load I've ever found for my Taurus).

All of these load, while perfectly safe in my firearms may not be suited for yours. All of the loads listed follow current and previous data published. Your Mileage may vary...

Marshal and Sanow did a study on this in their latest stopping power book. They found that the lightweight (115-grain) bullets gained velocity, and the velocity gain went down as bullet weight increased. Some of the 147-grain loads actually lost velocity because the barrel friction slowed the round down after the powder burn was over.

I don't have data for 9mm, but I did test a 10mm. From an 11" barrel (Oly 10mm upper w/5.5 flash suppressor), 10mm showed significant velocity increases across a range of bullet weights over a 5" barrel (Colt Delta Elite). Another forum member (Nordic3K) with a 16" barrelled 10mm Oly CAR-10 reported slightly higher velocities than my 11" carbine barrel.

Guns'n Ammo performed a test using varying lengths of barrels and a relatively weak handgun cartridge (.32?). The goal was to find a barrel length where the bullet would just drop out of the muzzle. The test was performed with the assistance of a barrel maker so they had access to whatever length barrel they needed. They had to increase barrel length to several FEET before the bullet would stop inside the barrel. Even that wasn't repeatable. Sometimes it would get lodged inside the barrel, other times it would pop out with enough gusto that you wouldn't want to be standing in front of it. Pretty fascinating test.
