According to Sig FAQ, you can get a 9mm drop-in barrel for Sig p229s originally chambered in .40/.357Sig (through Bar-Sto).  Bar-Sto hasn't responded to my e-mails, so can anyboy confirm this?  Does it work reliably?  So far, all the handguns I own are 9mm, but I'm thinking of getting a Sig p229 in .40.  I'd like the flexibility of being able to switch between .40//357Sig/9mm.

Also, would the 9mm drop-in barrel still work with the .40cal magazines, or would I need to get the 9mm mags?

Yes it works.  You have to have an aftermarket barrel designed for use in the .40cal P229.  The 9mm P229 has different dimesions in the slide internally.  You have to use the Bar-Sto or similar to work.

The 9mm chamber will center the case over the firing pin.  The .40 extractor will grab the 9mm groove.  So the gun fires and extracts/ejects fine with 9mm even though it's a .40 breech face.

I do not have one myself, but I've seen it work on a friends P229.  I just don't own a P229 to try it on.

The .40 and 9mm mags are different on the P229.  The 9mm P229 mags are the same as a P228/P226 9mm mag.  They do fit fine in a .40 P229.  I would think they would probably work OK out of a .40 mag.  It they don't then you just need to buy a couple 9mm mags.

Having a three caliber gun sounds pretty attractive.  I think I would buy the 9mm barrel if I had a P229 in .40/.357.  I think it's just an expansion of the capabilities of the gun, but I wouldn't just go buy a P229 in .40 to just shoot 9mm out of.

Seem to recall lots of threads on this awhile back.  I think BarSto claimed it was feasible and not dangerous just you may have trouble with extraction/ejection.  Can't remember all the details.  I am actually considering doing the same thing.  Might as well order a barrel from Olympic/Safari Arms even though lag times might be a little while on those parts right now.  They are BUSY, BUSY!

I had a conversion with Stony at Bar-
Sto, he told me they can make a 9mm barrel for my Glock 35, so i figure this would work for your SIG.

Thnkas for the info.  I hopefully will be able to get the p229 in the next few month.  I hope the .40 magazines work with 9mm (I've been told the .40 mags will work with 9mm in the SigPro).

I have used the 9mm simunitions conversion extensively with a .40 P229. Of course, these only work with 9mm simunitions rounds, and will not chamber normal 9mm ammo, but the principle is the same.

This conversion requires a feed ramp extension to be placed on the frame, but it is a 2-second no-tools change. The 9mm rounds load and function fairly well in the .40 magazine. You can also put 15 rounds of 9mm in a 12 round P229 magazine. P226 magazines will not work in a P229.
