Are the VR on the barrel silver soldered or welded to the barrel? Anyone know? I have an extra barrel laying around and I wanted to remove the VR.

IIRC, it's soldered by a robot so it's almost no heat transferrance.  I could be wrong, however.

Any thing hot enough to loosen the braze will also damage the finish and barrel metal.

Sell the bbl. you have and buy the bbl. you want.  At least you won't end up with a junk bbl.

Good point.  You could probably pull at least $75-$100 for the barrel here on the equipment exchange and buy a plain Police barrel for around $100 from AI&P Tactical

I have seen the movie from European factory how they solder the rib to the barrel. They fluxed all touch points with flux and silver powder mix, warped the rib and barrel with steel wire and load them to the electric furnace with controlled atmosphere, it was not a robot soldering it. Barrels were there for few minutes only.

Picked up the Mossberg GR sight set. It says to silver solder the FSB on to the barrel. Will SS the FSB damage the barrel metal?

No.  However the silver solder will probably require quite a bit more heat than a MAP or propane torch will put out.
